Storm
Hi there, I am about to create my first Rippex wallet. I would like the process to be as secure as possible. Here are my thoughts of doing it: 1. Format my computer (reinstall windows, wipe everything). 2. Install the Rippex software (from a USB-stick, so that the computer will not go online before creating the wallet). 3. Install the wallet on a newly bought USB-stick that has not been in contact with the internet. 4. Make paper copies of the secret key. 5. Make sure that the USB stick with the wallet will ever be plugged into a computer with internet connection. Are the above steps correct in order to make a 99.99% secure cold wallet? Do I need to make a backup of the wallet file/USB-stick? Or is that not nessecary when I have several versions of the secret key? Are there any more kind of backups that I should make? (e.g. if there is a fire in my apartment, and both the secret keys and the cold wallet is destroyed) Best regards from the quite paranoid Storm. Yes, keep in mind both paper and usb wallets are poor long term storage choices. Paper degrades and USB sticks are susceptible to magnetic fields. You don't have to reinstall windows, you could run a linux live cd as long as the rippex wallet runs on linux. If not you could create a wallet with rippled from the command line. Also you should verify it's a valid address you are funding. You could create a keypair with one wallet and verify it with another or again you could use rippled to verify the key. Sending a minimal amount of XRP to the wallet and submitting a transaction to the network would further verify a valid key but would defeat the goal creating of cold wallet.
