XRPobserver
Dear XRP Community I've recently started investing in XRP because I believe in the product and see the enormous potential. I'm no cryptocurrency expert as this is the first crypto coin I've invested in. Seeing I wanted more security I purchased the Ledger Blue and was under the assumption that my XRP would be stored on there. I've installed the "Ledger Wallet Ripple" on PC 1 and successfully transferred XRP using the Ledger Blue to said wallet. However when I install "Ledger Wallet Ripple" on PC 2 and use the Ledger Blue to open it I do not see the XRP. Am I mistaken in thinking that the XRP are stored on the Ledger Blue and thus installing "Ledger Wallet Ripple" on any laptop or PC would show my XRP? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Omnius
Hi XRPobserver, You are correct. all information is stored on the ledger, so it shouldnt matter on which device you use it. I suggest that you contact ledger themselves. They are quite responsive in my experience. One thing that you can doublecheck is if you are using the latest firmware of the device. Some important misconceptions... With Ripple, no coins are ever stored anywhere other than the actual Ripple ledger. For instance, if you use a hardware wallet such as a ledger, the coins don't live on your device. What the device is designed to protect is your private key, which is the key to sending funds to anyone. If someone gets a hold of that private key, you're screwed. The device is designed to protect against that. The key merely allows you to send funds to any other address. The public address you have allows incoming transmissions. The Ledger supposedly has the ability to protect that key against anyone getting the private key by the various advertised methods. As to why you don't see the XRP in your wallet from device to device, I'm not entirely sure as I'm not sure how the ledger devices work. But, you should definitely alter your mindset about where the coins are stored. I agree with @Omnius, it is probably best to contact Ledger themselves. SpikarXRP
Keep re-syncing. I migrated all my coins onto My Ledger Nano S on PC1 (windows 10) - and all went fine. I installed the wallet on PC2 (Mac OS Sierra) - and they did not appear .... however, after a few re-syncing attempts, they appeared! I had my XRP on an online wallet that was created where I exchanged from, however was told to grab myself the nano s and put them straight on there as if any of the exchanges get hacked or go under, you're really only insured for 1-2% of your wallets value. There are some diehard people on here that swear the only true way to store XRP is on a completely offline cold storage wallet on 75 different SD cards encrypted with navajo codetalking protocol protected by voodoo and velociraptors. Their point is fair though, given that buying something like a Ledger requires you to have trust in the people producing the product. Theoretically they could be bad actors and have some back door somewhere and steal all your zerps...With regards to exchanges, it is entirely possible that an exchange could go under, get shutdown, get hacked or whatever, and you'd be screwed on your assets. So yeah, I wouldn't place anything on an exchange that you intend to keep for a long time. (I expect this paradigm to change as the world changes with it). At the end of the day you have to place trust somewhere. That being said, I believe that using a hardware wallet from a company you trust probably hits the sweet spot between safety and sanity. From what I understand, Ledger seems to be a reputable company. What I would do is seek out someone who understands the technology that Ledger utilizes and pick their brain on how secure it might be. I'm guessing in the near future we'll have banks storing our digital assets the same way they store fiat, but that's a few years out. Long story short is that there is no perfectly correct answer. Just a slider from "risky to safe" that have pros and cons (speed, accessibility, etc...) It's all up to you. Khaleesi and XRPobserver 1
Guest
From what I read I believe the Ledger is a safe storage device.... but it has a weak link.... (as do all wallets) you. One chap on here lost his Zerps because although he followed security protocols about wallets, so presumably the Zerps were safely stored, he needed a way to keep his secret passwords so he put them in his Evernote app. Which was hacked online... and his Zerps stolen. If he was using a Ledger Blue it wouldn't have protected him from his own mistake... as mentioned above the coins are not in the device...they are in the Distributed Ledger accross the Ripple network. Just trying to raise awareness of what you need to understand to protect your Zerps.

That's something that you'd be risking if you were to keep your secret keys on another online application? What if you never put them online - instead, physically write down your keys on 3 seperate papers and store them where you'd remember in your house? Of course... if your house gets burnt then you've lost your security keys...... but hey... if that was the case.. then you'd be one unlucky fella. Guest
Yes putting the secret anywhere online is very risky. You can even loose your Zerps just leaving the key visible to your cellphone camera. If any laptop, tv, game console, phone or online camera is hacked and your secret key is in its field of view..... XRPobserver
I want to thank everybody who took the time to post in this thread. Now I understand that XRP are always stored on the ledger and are not physically or digitally on the Ledger Blue. It protects your keys and can be unlocked by the 24 words provided. After testing I also figured out why it wasn't working on the second PC. Seeing this is my work laptop which can't synch with the ledger due to security. On every other machine outside our network it works. I'm now thinking it might be a smart move to either store your security words on physical paper on 3 different locations. or alternatively store it in a locker at the bank which might be the best option. I'm also hoping XRP will shoot to the moon and can't wait what will happen after the lockup, the conference and the SBI test with XRP.
pucksterpete
I have a question about the Ledger Blue or Nano Is it possible to export the private (secret key) for the Ripple address that is created within the device?

Re-reading this thread reminded me I had meant to advise @Hodlezerper that he had grossly misrepresented the cold wallet advocates.... no-one mixes voodo and velociraptors... ( although the alliteration IS delicious ) .... they get skittish from the burning incense. Instead, and obviously, there are the two differing schools of thought... one using metaphysical mysticysim, and the other relying on sheer horse (or more correctly, raptor) power. Several grisly tests have shown that no-one will be able to decrypt a cold wallet while being gnawed on by velociraptors. Even zombie armies sent by black hat voodo priestesses turned out to be merely delightful afternoon snacks for Velo1 and 2. So although the raptor defence is slightly old fashioned at 67 million years, it still cuts the mustard ( or thigh bone ). PS Ever noticed how when the market is quiet the Zerbox goes idle and the natives go a bit more dippy than usual?

As long as the raptors can hold for another 5 years or so, that's all we need to know if zerps will indeed have value. And yes, my favorite time on the zerpbox is when the market is quiet. There seems to be a fairly ridiculous amount of people who hop on and get crazy when there is movement. Loving this 20 cent hold though. Scary as it could shoot up or plummet hahah.
