The mission window is sometime in 2019.

The company operating the moon landing is Astobotic . The service we would be using is the DHL MoonBox . It is a personalized deliver to the moon service, and will work as a time capsule. The payload will be delivered by the reliable Atlas V.

I have also learned that the target location is the Lacus Mortis.

I have done the preliminary signup and have already filled out the content information (small folded piece of paper) and statement:

Quote

This is done on behalf of XRPChat, a cryptographic ripple payment community, as a education and promotional endeavour on and about ripple and XRP- the digital token utilized by the ripple network.

What is included in the order:

  • Moon Capsule reservation to send a personal keepsake on Astrobotic's lunar lander to the Moon
  • Container to send your keepsake to Astrobotic
  • Prepaid postage to send the container and its contents to Astrobotic for integration on the lunar lander
  • Instructions on how to mail the container and its contents to Astrobotic
  • Item Declaration Form
  • Mission Certificate
  • Map of the Moon, showing the landing site
  • Quarterly mission updates leading up to launch
  • Updates as the mission occurs, including launch, spacecraft deployment, lunar orbit insertion, and landing
  • High resolution images and video of the launch
  • Images of the Moon Pod on the Moon, which will carry all items sent through MoonBox™

The capsule we would consider starts at 0.5" X 0.125" for $460. If for some reason we overshoot our target we can increase the box size or put additional funds towards other aspects of the program.  Shipping is $50.

The smallest order then is 460+50= 510. I see nothing about taxes. This is USD and would equal to about $637.82 CAD. Bluzelle has very low liquidity so withdrawing CAD from the network is a lot of work and would be best served going XRP-> BTC-> CAD. I recommend a target of $550 USD/ $688 CAD just to be sure everything is covered with any excess put aside to fund the wallet in 2019.

This works out to 3175 XRP at today's prices. Lets round it up to 3200 XRP? And hope prices don't dip too much.

See the 1st Fundraiser Post for more info.

July 28

Initial fundraiser target is met and the mission is a GO!

What is next?

  • The initial funds have been withdrawn to Kraken and trading has started to liquidate them. This is to preserve current rate values.
  • The MoonBox will be ordered after Aug 27th (goal being Aug 29). This allows additional fundraising, perhaps increasing package size.
  • Now focus can be shifted to what is going IN the Moonbox!
    • Wallet design

Aug 1st.

Designing the wallet to send has lead me to think of the more practical aspects of the project and this some ideas I have floating around my head-

  • Blackhole or open wallet?
  • Paper or other medium?
  • Include Instructions?

I have gone back and forth between a blackhole and open wallet. On one hand there is simplicity and trust ensured with a blackhole wallet. On the other I like the idea that some future generation will rush to the moon for the 'free' XRP motherload. However, touching on the next point, I am not sure how our paper wallet will fare on the moon. I am not seeing any specs on the MoonBox, and we have to assume while there is some sort of regular safety features built in that there is no aired up, climate controlled, heated and vacuum sealed safe extras.

Unless our chosen box's size increases dramatically to better fit an alternative durable material I am think I am going to have pull a mission control decision and say the wallet will be a blackhole. If the medium has a good chance of not making it in the decades to come then it essentially becomes a blackhole; might as well start off as one and have the simplicity and trust ensured it provides.

As for instructions- space is limited, but I am sure we can squeeze something on, even if it is just a qr code to a site with the instructions (maybe a project page or this forum).

I may have the ability to use an industrial printer on durable plastics with the best quality inks. The print is limited to 1 side and material thickness generally 0.04 inch. You would not be able to fold it inside a tiny box, so you would be limited to 3 hexagonal sized cutouts that would exactly fit inside the box.

I would still vote on using an open wallet with the master key in the mun box. The question I have is, how do we ensure that the wallet address is publicly known and the secret key is valid, but the secret key has not been seen by anyone? I'm thinking some sort of lotto- style scratch off that can fit in the moon box.

Key/wallet pair would need to be randomly generated, converted to a pdf or png, printed(with key hidden), placed in mun box, tracking label affixed, given to postal carrier and delivered without any chance of key being known. Am I over thinking this?

Industrial printer... *drool*

The size just got bumped up a touch so it might help. There is no such thing as overthinking, I am open to suggestions. I have a few alt ideas as well, but I was waiting to see what the end total was.

Aug 8 Update

Since I am getting questions about continuing donations and wallets in general here is a update:

The address for donations remains the same, until the project and is done it is reserved solely for this use.

or

~Quaere

When it is time for a wallet to be used to store the amount needed to send to the moon I will generate a new virgin wallet and send the agreed amount to it. This way people can track and see the 'working' wallets history, trustlines, withdrawals, etc. while the actual moon wallet will be neat and clean. When the time comes to make the actual MoonBox reservation (timeline has last donation acceptance date as Aug 27), the donations acceptance specifically for the MoonBox will be closed, but the address can still be used to accept donations for the project in general (another 'timeline' will be announced for the second round for the actual amount to be sent to the wallet.

Once the MoonBox is ordered we have 2-5 weeks to figure out the nitty gritty moon wallets details. I was going to make the moon based wallet a blackhole, but some forum members are really pushing for the wallet to remain open and the secret key sent as well- they seem to like the idea of future generations claiming the prize. I will post a poll closer the the decision time to settle the issue- want to focus on one thing at a time!

Aug 28 Update

The first fundraiser is now closed and a big thank you for all you contributed!

The address (see post above) will still be accepting donations, but all donations collected from this point forward will no longer be put towards the MoonBox as I will be ordering it soon.

With the fundraising done attention can be turned to the wallet details. Further posts will be published for somethings (open/ cold, artwork/ medium, message, vanity address, etc).

Sept. 13 Update

IMG_20170912_205808.thumb.gif.61cf6d418edbf8eb4105645a837f7271.gifThe MoonBox has landed!

A very nice and shiny box with embossed gold logo and type. Included in the parcel was a shimmery certificate (seen below).

For those that can't make it out it says:

This certificate officially recognizes XRP CHAT

Space Pioneer

For a moon capsule reservation on Astrobotic's Lunar Lander.

Fine print: Moon Capsule shall be placed on the moon in perpetuity.

IMG_20170912_210127.thumb.gif.b616f5e9d004bf42327fa5f9439a03f1.gifMore paperwork! Besides a introductory letter there was a list of things not allowed to be included (the Luners have strict gun control laws apparently).

IMG_20170912_210231.thumb.gif.18f7a27dee754a8a2eeef67c0cd5bdce.gifFinally there was a small map of the landing spot and a reminder to test out the size of the item to be sent.
