ZX81_1k
I just transferred some XRP from Kraken to a paper wallet and received a confirmation of the deposit amount from GateHub. Now, a while back I did add my paper wallet to GateHub to see if it could safely be imported but then I removed it from their system straight away and assumed they removed all references to it. I guess they still have it referenced in my account somewhere but it's not evident on my wallets section of GateHub. Perhaps they've also still got the secret key which defeats the object of me keeping it in cold storage. I think I'll now need to create another paper wallet and transfer the XRP from the existing one just to be on the safe side.
AdamM
If you have a lot of xrp, have you considered a hardware wallet? Paper burns, fades & rots.. sure you can have it down in two places but I still don't like the idea of paper.....I went with ledger wallet nano s though other options available... I just like having the other crypto support as I want to get litecoin too. I got the 24 safe words on two usbs on an evercrypt encrypted folder, one onsite the other offsite. I also tested wiping the device and restoring (proving lost, damaged or stolen) and was able to recover everything seamlessly. edit: only draw back with nano s so far is that you can only have 4 cryptos loaded at any given time (might be 5 can't remember from when I was testing it) though ledger support site said you can delete one and add another the same wallet will be loaded again so theoretically you can have them all but would need to remove and install on demand if you wanted more than what can loaded at any given time. ZX81_1k
Thanks, I might look in to a Nano S. I don't have a great deal of XRP but enough to make things interesting and I've had them for 4 years so far so I'd be miffed of I lost them. I'll stick with paper right now.... Planning on keeping them for decades and I know paper lasts years. Tech become obsolete too fast for my liking. I'm also yet to encounter data storage that hasn't failed me at an inopportune moment. From my wobbly 16kb RAM pack on a ZX81 (Google it) when I was a kid, through various disks and drives to SSD... I've just encounter my first laptop with no standard USB port as they're now on their way out too. I sound like a Luddite, don't I. Haha. Ahhh, the irony of using paper to back-up cutting edge technology isn't lost on me. Anyway, hopefully I'll hear from GateHub today and discover why they've not fully removed my wallet. You could not be more wrong in thinking that paper is less reliable than usb drive. How did you come up with this conclusion? Flash usb drive is probably the least reliable way to back up stuff. HDD drives probably a bit better, but in no way it beats paper for reliability (if you know what you are doing). It is quite sad that in this day and age paper is still king in that regard. Also you can print encrypted stuff on paper, i.e. don't have to print in plain text if you so choose.

Yeah probably not worth the investment for a nano if you aren't storing an amount to justify the expense.... @velmet, my crypto isn't on USB flash, it's on a hardware wallet ledger nano s...I just don't like the idea of having something written out on a piece of paper in clear text hence the safe word for restoring the nano is in encrypted folders on 2 USB's. I doubt I'll get a failure with 2 though in saying that I'll get a 3rd & 4th just to be safe with 2 onsite 2 offsite. It's more secure that way as anyone who finds the USB (like they could with paper) won't have any chance of getting to the data and all the private keys and passwords within. I'm pretty diligent with my tech, I'm an it engineer by trade and would be periodically testing access to these devices as any sane person would with this medium. If anyone was doing something similar just make sure you're not mounting your encrypted containers on internet connected devices. Never ever consider cloud for storing such data, even with the best encryption it's not worth the risk. Edited July 27, 2017 by AdamM
ZX81_1k
Thanks for the advice @AdamM I think I'll look at a Nano (the portfolio would more than justify the expenditure) but I'll keep a paper backup to be safe. I've also worked in the industry for about 20 years which probably explains my healthy distrust IT. On a separate note, I've had several emails from GateHub.... They're not sure how it happened and are looking in to it.
