Ripple Announces GateHub

First, we apologize for any confusion we caused by earlier communications. We continue to support the growth and expansion of a Ripple ecosystem of which XRP remains an important part.

We are pleased to announce that we will be launching an optional migration path from Ripple Trade to GateHub to provide users with a streamlined transition. If you choose to do so, you will soon be able to migrate with just a few clicks.

We believe that GateHub is committed to developing a trustworthy business around the consumer and gateway use case. We are excited to see new and great products building out the Ripple ecosystem.

All users will have the option to seamlessly migrate their Ripple Trade wallet to GateHub or an alternative wallet provider to administer their funds. To clarify further, U.S. users must migrate their funds prior to January 13.

We expect GateHub to be ready over the next week. We will share more information about migrating your wallet to GateHub shortly. In the meantime, please contact us with any questions at
support@ripple.com.

Thank you,
The Ripple Trade team

So, in their follow up email they say "First, we apologize for any confusion we caused by earlier communications. We continue to support the growth and expansion of a Ripple ecosystem of which XRP remains an important part." They link to their Ripple Vision document. Is this convincing to anyone?

Didn't they have at least one internal conversation about how the initial email would be received? The backlash must have been pretty dramatic for the second email. I looked at it and thought why wasn't this included the first go round? Whose running the asylum?

Even if Gatehub is trustworthy, I'm not sure if other gateways can be trusted, I mean I will have to give up my secret keys , which means XRP will no longer be a counterparty risk free crypto for individuals but only for FIs.

Why would you have to give up your secret keys?

People freaked out because Ripple doesn't want to provide a wallet anymore. Who could've anticipated that?  The original email provided a link to other wallet providers.

They probably decided to create a migration path out of pity for the poor souls who require a lot of hand-holding.  (Just a snarky guess...)

You don't need to give up your secret keys.

Gatehub is a nice gateway with built in wallet, but they are going to face the same problems which caused ripple and snapswap to close their services for end users. How are they going to solve these problems?

Gatehub stores your secret key in their databases, so you're trusting them not to get hacked.

Really?? I asked them a question as soon as they made announcement on xrptalk and they swear that they don't have access to users keys.

The official line is:

Quote

There have been some questions from the community about secret key security at GateHub. Secret keys and passwords are hashed and encrypted using industry standard algorithms with high cost factors to protect against brute-force attacks. We would like to point out that our employees do not have access to your passwords and secret keys. In case you forget your GateHub password, the only way to regain access to your account is by using your recovery key, which decrypts your account data.
