Few questions about cold wallet

I understand that I can simply generate a public key / secret key pair using https://octillionsa.github.io/generate-ripple-wallet/ or the "minimalist ripple client," and then send 50~100 XRP to the generated public key address to activate it. I still have a few questions which I've written below.

1. What is identity? Is it equivalent to public key that is associated with a specific secret key?

2. Is it recommended to encrypt the secret key (on minimalist ripple client) with a passphrase?

3. Do I need to have a username in order to connect to Ripple? What is the use of a username?

4. What is the point of activating each account with some amount of XRP? And how much XRP is enough for activation.

5. What are "trust" and "trustlines?"

6. So say I've generated a public key / secret key pair and sent a payment to the public key. So then I type in my secret key on the minimalist ripple client and then connect to Ripple network, and now I can send XRP funds?

7. Lastly, are the secret keys generated (offline) by https://octillionsa.github.io/generate-ripple-wallet/ and the "minimalist ripple client" safe to use?

Thank you in advance for all your help.
