wojake
I'm sure most of you have read that Coil is shutting down temporarily and in the past, they were working on a layer-2 smart contract approach called Codius, which never came to fruition. While Codius' development has been delayed before Coil's shutdown, layer-2 smart contracts hosted in their own micro-network is still a promising approach to decentralized applications. Evernode's HotPocket solution is promising as well and their dev team is still going strong developing their Hooks & HotPocket. What are your thoughts? Are you sure they were? I thought that was abandoned a long time ago.

Brandon Wilson from Codius has picked it up for a while to facilitate payments via web monetization in the OpenFaaS (Function as a Service?) : https://github.com/codius/codius-faas I think Codius was/is an interesting idea. Comparing it to what we now know as 'smart contracts' I would say a smart contract is like a 'dumb object' as in Object Oriented design pattern, where a standalone Codius contract is more of a 'smart agent' as in Agent Oriented design pattern. The major benefit of Codius imo is that it can hold and manage a secret, which a smart contract cannot. E.g. Codius could be used to implement a trustless cross-chain bridge. Although the question still remains, how decentralized and trustless actually is a Codius implementation. BillyOckham

It’s really hard for me to fathom how such potentially important systems are being barely supported. Oh well, whatever will be will be…

Oh well, whatever will be will be… Yeah, that's how it is with innovation, 9 out of 10 ideas with potential will fail. I think it had too many loose ends to take the gamble and put more effort in it.
