Wait, you weren't even the one who said it.

Maybe I'm weird, but for me free speech comes out of the conundrum that the truth exists, but us humans are really bad at figuring out what the truth is. So we let people profess what they believe to be true, even if it's weird, rather than dictate what's true.

So if we really believe in free speech then we believe people have the right to advocate for weird things, like the Pope being the universal leader, or whatever.

Ironically, the one thing you can't advocate for under this philosophy is relativism. Is there is no truth, then freedom of speech would be bullshit.  Although I fully admit that my view on freedom of speech is not the only one, nor is it the majority.

Thanks. :)

See, I coulda been meaner about it - but I chose not to do so... had to work at it, too.  Almost like a job, but different!

Was all primed and ready to go with "So, the guy who's a fan of the guy who wrote Choices, Values, and Frames has problems with people making choices, having different values, or changing frames?  I suggest you read Kierkegaard - particular attention to Concept of Irony" - but, no, I went for the laugh to defuse the tension and not sound like total pedant that I actually probably mostly am (or at least fear that I'd sound like, to most people, if I really told the truth).

I prefer laughs.  Smiles are good, too.  Always consider either of those a win - or at least an incremental step toward.

Beats starting a war.

(Speaking of which - gotta gear up to defuse whatever's coming with this "You got a problem with the Pope?" thing - totally see "Well, you do, now!" coming... :))

You wanted to be meaner to me?  Not sure how to take that! A good Kierkegaardian aporia?

Good luck with the Papists :D

Wait! I'm a raging Papist and yet I assure you need no luck with me. Come and feel the plush fluffiness of the soft side of dogmatism.

I just think it's ironic that the person most strongly advocating for free speech excludes the people he thinks are full of shit. The whole point of free speech is including the people you think are full of shit, because there's a possibly, however small, that they might actually be full of sweet nectar.

Yes it is. Western mass media is basically a mouthpiece for the government. Your Orwell chap wrote a documentary about it. Don't think for a minute that we're better than the others. We're probably worse.

Have to agree with Brian. I am from Australia and our media never question anything our government does. I am a huge fan of the US. Love its patriotism towards its own country (though this seems to be changing). But we need to remember, the US government (not its people) are the only ones insane enough to drop an atomic bomb. We justify it by saying it ended the war but this is legitimising its actions. Again, this was the government, not its people who are largely against such horrific actions.

Sorry mate but that is flat out wrong.  I have no idea how you could possibly come to that conclusion.

They question it all the time.  It’s certainly true that western media are not as good as they should be, and in fact some sections are not much more than advocates for particular rich owners and their views.

But journalism, although mightily affected by the cuts and changes due to social media, is not completely dead.  And to say it never questions the government is just completely false.   I can only assume you let hyperbole take you away for a moment there…

No I don’t—- but God does.

It's the hat, right?  Or the whiff of flirtation with Marxism?  Those are the two I get complaints about the most.  (Personally, I prefer Groucho to Karl.  Not much I can do about the hat, though I am reminded, for some reason, of an old Frank Sinatra joke:  "Didja hear that this Pope recognized Israel?  The Jews were so grateful that they lowered the rent on the Vatican!")
