Ledger is supporting flare, initially it's on the ETH network. All you need is your xrp address and an Eth address.

Well you are not alone. Unfortunately I informed my ex about the need to claim Spark, and her software programmer dad cant figure out how to do it. So I get a panicked message through a mutual friend asking for help.

After all the BS I dont want to, but I agreed to do it for them. They have to send me their keys, so I could steal everything (obviously I wont do that) but I'm considering a fee. Still probably wont do that, but I should.

Welcome @jackieblue77 ... not a dumb question, and don't worry - we'll help you get there. Plenty of time :beach:

Let me get this right: Did you attempt to use your Ledger Ethereum account as your future Flare address, and wish to change that to something different? Or is is that you haven't gone through any of the steps yet?

If you haven't done anything yet, the first step is to obtain a new Ethereum address. IMO the most practical method for you will be to use MetaMask.

Then you'll go through the steps here

https://docs.xrptoolkit.com/claim-spark-tokens

We'll help you if you get stuck, so take it as slow as you need to.

Maybe you already have MetaMask installed; if so, it will be best to create a 'new MetaMask', separate from the one you might already be using. I use Brave Browser, so what I did is create a separate profile from the main profile I use. MetaMask data is partitioned in each 'profile' - so you could have 5 different profiles, each with 5 different MetaMask instances if you wanted.

The rub is in the terminology. When you create a 'new MetaMask' you're really creating a new MetaMask vault .. so when you add the MetaMask extension in the new profile, and go through the setup, you've created a vault. The critical thing is to write down the seed phrase, and not store it on your computer. Sort of like when you would set up a Ledger Nano. The seed phrase is the golden ticket to the entire vault. If you lose it, you lose everything.

Once you have the vault created, and have copied down the seed phrase, an account is automatically created (Account 1) .... If you were to click on 'Create Account' again, a second account would be generated. These accounts have a public key - more commonly referred to as an address - so at that point you'd have a vault with two accounts, each with a public key (address) that you can give out to anybody so they can send stuff to you. But never give the seed phrase. The seed phrase can also be referred to as the 'secret key' -- the public key and secret key, together, are referred to as the keystore file - sometimes you'll be able to save both keys as one file.

A bit long-winded, but just want to be clear on the terms! Somebody please correct me if I'm a bit off in my description  .... Now then, go set up your MetaMask, and once you do - you'll automatically have created 'Account 1' - (I changed the name to 'FLR Distribution)' - you'll take that 'Account 1' address/public key, and use it in the @xrptoolkit tool -- this address will become your new Flare address where your FLR are distributed to.

Note: It's best to use that first address (for Account 1, or whatever you call it)

It's a lot to digest, but you'll get it :drinks:

I understand, this is a hard time for you. Send the keys to me and I’ll take care of it for you :ok:

In reality, I'm pretty sure that if they sent me their keys and I tried to steal them... some sort of legal action could be pursued by them. At a minimum, if they sued and a judge ordered me to return the XRP & FLR, and I refused... then I could be held in contempt of court and jailed. I guess I could go on the run, I do enjoy traveling, but that just seems like too much effort to gain some money via a non legitimate way.

Also, I'd have to be honest with myself that I would be a thief. I got out of the insurance business partially to avoid scamming folks being my method of generating personal income.

However I appreciate your offer!

No. FLR will be its own network only using the same address format as ETH.  Has NOTHING to do with the ethereum network.

Good guy Karma Coverage. Gotta say though I'm not all that concerned about your going to jail, that's a risk I'm willing to take.

Thank you for clarifying, so will the tokens be ledger compatible do you know, and the tokens sit on xrpl?

No they sit on the Flare network.

Dunno if this is helpful or not:

No the Eth wallet is purely just to get an Eth compatible address.  The ETh network and the new Flare network are completely seperate.  Think of them as continents.  You now have an address 12 East St Harbourtown.   That is a valid address in North America and also in UK.

So the ETH wallet is on the USA and the new wallet wallet will be for UK.

You own the address because you own the keys.  You do own the keys don’t you?  The 12 words or 24 words or whatever?

If you don’t own the keys you need to do it again with an address that you DO have the keys for.

When Flare starts up you will get a new software wallet or hardware wallet that is for the Flare continent.  You will create it with the keys that you have from the ETH wallet because the keys match the address.

Okay so I am super confused now:lol: - I read through your answer twice (Thanks BTW)  and clicked the link and it tells me what I assume are all the steps I took back in December for my ledger nanos to receive the FLR and back then they said Ledger would support it and now do not?? I have 4 nanos but only one metamask wallet that I guess I set up back then but am unsure as I never use Metamask and know nothing about it so where do I go to " claim" the FLR before the 6/11 deadline???

I’m not sure who you are replying to,  but I think I can help clarify the “claim” confusion.

If indeed you did setup the nanos’ back then for Flare,  then you have already “claimed”.

The “claim” is simply putting a Flare address into the messagekey field of your XRP account.

The Spark distribution smart contract (which will run in a month or two) will see that Flare address in the XRPL account messagekey field and use it as the address to send Spark to.

So you need do nothing further if you’ve already set that field.  Go to https://xrpscan.com/ and at the top right put in your public XRP address (starts with an ‘r’) and it will tell you if you are setup for Flare.  Look for the flame icon and an amount of Spark claimed.  The image below is an account NOT set for Flare claim but it shows how many Spark they would get if they set the address.

Last I heard Ledger WERE supporting Flare so I’m not sure why you think they are not.  If you’ve done the setup and it says so on XRP scan then you are probably ok with no action required so long as you have the keys or seed words.

The bit that slightly worries me is do people understand about needing the mnemonic seed phrase for the ETH compatible Flare address they are using?   If you don’t understand that then you may get into trouble.

This is all just my understanding of things and the proper setup for Flare is your responsibility not mine...  :)   (Cover my ass text)

To be honest, given how confused some people seem, and that it is possible they will screw up, and then blame others, I’m starting to think I might stop trying to explain this stuff...  it could become problematic.

okay making some progress- i understand a little better now- I do not need MetaMask since I have Ledger Nanos - I tried to paste the message key like the toolkit page says but it will not let me update - the update button is grayed out and not clickable
