Ripple never said to have that feature in next goals, but there was a commit from Nik Bougalis about a modification to the protocol to be able to close/merge accounts.

Maybe at “589” the 20 XRP reserve per account is worth reclaiming 🤔

nice privilege for you and me perhaps, but for some very poor people e.g. in third worlds, 20 xrp is a lot of money, and prohibits opening an account at all

Indeed, be interesting to see where this takes us. Either the reserve gets lowered, or the average user actually does not have their own wallet. In the same way we may have a PayPal account, but it’s not a bank account.

Can you explain why this is important?

1) ability to reduce the number of deserted addresses on XRP ledger

2) the ability to spend those XRP you used to activate one of your N accounts

@nikb

@JoelKatz

Would be good to get your input here. What are the pros and cons of adding an account merge feature like that used in XLM ledger?

There is already extensive discussion around this here

and here

Will account merging be implemented on the XRP ledger at some point? If so, when? If not, why?

Maybe.
In the future.
Because in that case, there are good reasons against this feature that are not possible to overcome.

Brilliant. Thanks for this response. Are there any currently known issues with implementing account merge?

Yes, see the threads I linked. For example it might make it very easy to spam, it makes it necessary to redesign existing features that assume an account that existed at the time a transaction was validated to be existing in the future and the return on implementing such a feature depends a lot on how users are going to adopt it. Since it mostly targets entities like certain exchanges that acted against the interest of their customers against better knowledge, I doubt that they have the competence or will to merge their accounts, even if it gives them a few thousand XRP for free (that's probably still not going to cover the cost of doing the merge).
