Kraken- Transfer between accounts

Yesterday I tried to transfer some XRP from my account to one of my friends accounts who also uses Kraken. This feature was no longer available. I reached out to support and they stated that this is no longer available due to new regulations and could not comment further. Anyone know why this would be?

Interesting. Are you able to transfer/withdraw the assets into a different wallet? For example a ledger, or another exchange?

As far as I know, it's never been possible to transfer to someone else's Kraken account. To accomplish this, I had to first transfer xrp onto a Ledger Nano S, and then I was able to transfer what I wanted into someone else's account. The way it was explained to me, was that Kraken keeps each specific crypto pooled into group "piles" and then the individual accounts are just representations of what each person's claim of that particular "pile" is. Something about this method being easier for them to detect and therefore prevent fraud or theft. I may be wrong, but this was my interpretation of what support had told me a year or so ago.

Yes, that is an option.

As of 2 months ago, I was still able to transfer between accounts, so this is a new development.

Between your own Kraken accounts or between yours and someone else's?

One reason this is not generally permitted on any exchange, is because it would provide users a method to circumvent exchange fees whilst still using much of the functionality of that exchange.  If it were made easily possible for any user to send assets to any other user directly, users may set up an external matching system, or parallel orderbook for any given pair, and use this to match trades without either party paying any fee to the original exchange, and yet while still costing that exchange money by using its infrastructure to hold and transfer the funds involved.

If you do find an exchange that permits this, it will probably also charge high transfer fees to account for the downside risk it exposes itself to.
