I am pleased to share with you the 2016 Annual Report of the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC), Results in the Fight Against Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing.

 

The report highlights the role the Centre plays in helping our law enforcement and national security partners protect Canada and Canadians. Over the past year, we provided 1,655 disclosures of actionable financial intelligence to our partners to assist them in their investigations of money laundering, terrorist activity financing and threats to the security of Canada.

 

For example, the Centre joined our police and national security partners in Project Protect, a unique public-private partnership with Canada’s major banks to help combat human trafficking and the laundering of the proceeds derived from this activity. Since Project Protect was launched, FINTRAC’s disclosures to police regarding money laundering related to human trafficking have increased significantly.

 

The report also details the broad range of enabling and enforcement activities that the Centre undertook to ensure that businesses across the country met their obligations under the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act, including providing 302 policy interpretations, conducting 739 compliance examinations and levying 22 administrative monetary penalties.

 

Working closely with our police and national security partners and thousands of businesses across the country, we are achieving real results in creating a hostile environment for those who seek to abuse our financial system or threaten Canadians.
