Has Ripple Labs started "promoting" Kraken?

Two big connections to Kraken: Jesse Powell, Kraken CEO, was an angel investor in Ripple and owns a significant portion of Ripple's equity, and SBI led Kraken's Series B earlier this year. I think it makes sense that Ripple is promoting Kraken as an XRP exchange.

But why now? Why they've started promoting Kraken now and not one year ago?

I suspect we know who might be one of the first crypto gateways to be ILP implemented...

Hmm. Never thought of that.

However, GateHub is also planning to implement ILP support "soon"...

"Soon" is the optimal word. Besides they need several gateways to be implemented to show real benefits. I think it's safe to say Bitstamp will be involved as well.
Kraken has some real volumn in cryptos, much more so then Gatehub, between those two and Bitstamp we can get coverage over most major currency and crypto assets on market. I also suspect Ripple is trying to appease all partners- Gatehub for wallet and direct gateway and a little official plugin for Kraken and Bitstamp.

It would be quite a prize to get Kraken. They are well respected and about as solid as you can get with Bitcoin.

And who knows? With ILP enabled Kraken might be willing to move up from second tier to full tier Ripple gateway...

Soon yes, but connect ILP to WHAT?! Think about it.

How about the beginning of a Ripple powered crypto-exchange between the major gateways and current BTC/crypto exchanges.

This might be the start of such a test project.

thinking big is the name of this game.

Especially because they were chosen among all others to process those Mt. Gox claims.

If you guys missed this connection read this article. Circle is one of Krakens(not mentioned in the article) largest customers and now circle offers a wechat inspired p2p iMessage realtime payment app.  http://www.forbes.com/sites/laurashin/2016/09/13/you-can-now-send-a-payment-to-anyone-in-the-world-via-imessage/#64a98072685d

In its quest to become a go-to app for global peer-to-peer payments, Circle is now, with the arrival of iOS 10, available on iMessage, giving iOS 10 users the ability to send U.S. dollars, euros, pound sterling and Bitcoin to anyone via Apple’s texting service.

Does this sound familiar?

“We want to make money work the way the internet works,” says Allaire, noting that while people talk about “cross-border” payments, no one would describe an email that way. “Crucially, [Circle for iMessage] works with the dominant way people interact — messaging.”

With the recent expansion in EU and future expansion into China it sounds like a solid player.. Congrats on the pivot!

Earlier this year, Circle launched in the United Kingdom and is able to “passport” its license to other European countries, which they expect to roll out by the end of the year. It also announced the formation of a separate company, Circle China, as part of its goal of making free social payments global across currencies, as well as investment by major Chinese firms such as Baidu and IDG Capital Partners.

My sense is that Kraken will soon be a regulated exchange and get a bitlicense (through their acquisition of Coinsetter). Banks can exchange fiat and tokens with regulated exchanges but not with unregulated exchanges. Hence Kraken > GateHub. Moreover, the SBI connection that someone mentioned earlier. May also be that the user experience on GateHub is a bit unpredictable right now owing to the size of the operation. Would be great to see GateHub get an infusion of investment, I tend to like their user-focused approach.

What do you mean by an unpredictable user experience? GateHub has some issues (backend + usability), but other exchanges have them, too.
