New Ripple client/wallet: The World Exchange

I've been thinking about trust a lot lately....   And I've found that I am starting to trust TheWorldExchange.  It's really hard for someone to build something that needs other folks trust for it to be successful.

I figure that since the code is client side JavaScript....   if there was something shonky in there then someone would have highlighted it by now.

Its a really useful site I think....   It is,  or can be:

  • a paper wallet creator
  • an online wallet
  • a easy way to move/exchange dollars or other currencies to different exchanges.
  • a way to watch the ripple fee in realtime (fun for all the family).     :)
  • a number other things for advanced usage of Ripplenet.

Congratulations and thanks @pftq    I think you have done the community a very good service with that site.

I agree with @Tinyaccount, I find myself using this more often. Despite having accounts on almost all exchanges and platforms, sometimes I just find it easier to use.

@pftq do you have a feature/ product timeline for upcoming/ planed features?

A couple things I was wondering about:

  1. Is there a chance the name will be changed? When I am sharing the service with others there is sometimes confusion if it is a exchange or not. A more accurate description would be 'simplified direct RippleNet access' (a more sexy name or acronym needed).
  2. I personally like the continuous scrolling one web pages, but it there is a lot of information that can overload new users. I see that there is a 'About' link to the information presented further down the page, could this information perhaps be removed and placed onto a entirely separate page? Keeps the wallet/ ripple tools front and centre, prevents information overload while still keeping that information accessible if needed.
  3. Odd request- can you add a small fee or some other moneymaking scheme? I don't doubt that it takes time and effort to build, maintain and add functionality and I would like this to stick around and even expand. I think you should be compensated for that and paid for services. Even if you don't want to collect the monies raised could be put towards bounties or something

I think, and please take this as a compliment, the site is too intimidating/complex for the average user.

Consider a lot of folks are new to the Crypto world, and more specifically XRP. We are talking about real money for which most are not up to experimenting with.

The amount of effort that has gone into this, and the functionality it provides is fantastic ... but who is using it (or would use it) is likely a small percentage of hardcore enthusiasts ?

I agree, accept donations and pour that into a Frontend interface that simplifies it, and makes it far less intimidating for the masses.

My 2 zerps ...

For me, it's mostly a time issue rather than budget.  The HTML page is freely redesignable, so if someone wants to try or knows anyone willing to try messing with the HTML/css, feel free (the source is on the lower right GitHub).

The page will be around no worries, and even if it goes down, you could just download it off GitHub to run locally or reupload to another site.

I'm wondering if I should just hide the about details and only show it if the link is clicked, rather than leave it open to scroll into.  It's more or less a second page just rolled into the same HTML file.  There's a balance I'm trying to keep where it should be easy to use but still full function and has all the advanced features documented as well.

The name thing is kind of up in the air.  The original point of the project was to show that Ripple is actually an exchange, just one with no human involvement needed.  I wanted to avoid names like Ripple wallet because it doesn't get across that it can also issue tokens and trade as well, like with an exchange.

TradingWallet?

Also since you are here...   in the create page could you make the text boxes bigger so the whole key and address are never truncated from view?   Cut and paste can go wrong if tail is out of sight.  I realise it's device and browser dependant but it's happening on iPhone 6 at least.

Also is there any way you can protect people from the Apple bignumber issue?

Show warning if Safari detected or better yet if library involved is not up to date?

I might give it a try when I find the time (Single Dad duties keep me busy).

One other decentralized exchange that looks good is Bitshares/Openledger, here:

https://bitshares.openledger.info/

Found it via this video when googling 'the world's best decentralized exchange' :focus:

(more interesting info at around 9:34 mark')

It seems to have many parallels with Ripple-based theworldexchange.net, and it certainly piques my interest. Though admittedly I've not looked into it in any depth beyond making an account so far.

The big number issue never affected the World Exchange.  It uses the latest version of bignumbers.js for the ripplelib library, so there isn't that freezing issue.  Otherwise you wouldn't be able to load it on iPhone.

Will look at the font size for login page when I have a chance

I agree that this is an excellent site but the UI needs a lot of work to make it easier to navigate. I agree that a shorter domain name might be nice as well. I've offered the use of two domains in the past and that offer stands. Feel free to PM me if you're still interested @pftq

edit: just saw your post above, I guess I could try to see if someone wants to redesign the site and host it at one of my URLs.

Are we able to trade on The World Exchange and convert XRP to USD and vice versa directly after logging in without having first to send funds to a exchange like GateHub or BitStamp and it will still be stored in my wallet?

If so, this seems much more convenient.

Yes.  You don't even need a trustline if you want to just convert currencies (trustlines only needed to send/receive to others).  Literally just login and buy/sell the IOUs you want.  See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTKVvY3VIZg&index=4&list=PLHAK7FXoElZOyM6MaQ_O_i6ATap2k9r-o

It's the whole point why it's kind of redundant to have an traditional exchange that lists Ripple IOUs when Ripple has this functionality already built in (TheWorldExchange is just Ripple with a UI)

Question on this

So, if I trade XRP for USD, now I have a USD IOU balance on my Ripple address.  Lets say I want to cashout that USD IOU, am I able to send it to anyone that I have a trustline setup with, like Gatehub or Bitstamp or some other exchange?

It would be a deposit to Gatehub or Bitstamp.  Bitstamp has a deposit button for its BTC and USD IOUs when you login; basically a Ripple address you send to.  I think for Gatehub, you can either login to your Ripple wallet directly or also send to an address they instruct you to.
