I wanted to find a way to not even send .000001 XRP to anyone, but didn't see any way.  If anyone comes across a way to just generate a transaction between two accounts without sending anything, let me know - happy to change it.

Can bidirectional trustlines be used, or does it still burn XRP?

  • 3 weeks later...

I set up a Datacoin (DTC) orderbook on The World Exchange.

https://www.theworldexchange.net/?symbol1=DTC.rngnE9TXY5FguLPrtKncZx4jYRRhaR1Zhd&symbol2=XRP

Question is - when I want to redeem the DTC tokens sent to me by people to cash out for actual Datacoins what do I do in The World Exchange?  And how can I be sure that the DTC's are Datacoins?  Could there be other DTC's?

You can be sure what they sent you are DTC by looking the issuer (which should be your address).  Also by default no one can send you any token besides XRP and your own issuances unless you first add it to your Receivable Tokens list (aka trustlines), so by default unless you add someone else's DTC to your list, others will only be able to send you your own.

You'll be able to see the address of people who buy or send you DTC in your transaction history.  You can use that address to match up to the person you want to send actual cash (so you'll have to collect info and communicate with them somehow).  Alternatively, if you want to keep things anonymous or avoid having to manage the redemption process yourself, you can create buy orders for your own token in USD (Bitstamp or Gatehub), so anyone wanting to sell will hit your buy orders and receive USD they can redeem at Bitstamp.

@pftq I love what you've done with this the last few months!! Seriously, amazing work.

The thing I've been wondering about is the limitation of using 3-letter ticker symbols. While at the moment there are very few overlaps, there could be in the future and there's currently no quick-n-easy way to distinguish  between them, or the different backers. So I was wondering if there might be a way to incorporate a simple index that lists all the tokens and the entity that backs them, preferably with supplementary info. When issuing a new token on Ripple through TWE, one could have the option of writing a brief blurb about what it is/who backs it/how it's different.
This could evolve to perhaps include supporting legal contracts & documents. In my mind I imagine a sort of wikipedia-style page or pop-up box, but it could even be an early step towards creating a kickstarter-esque platform, where issuers can describe, advertise and state their case for whatever new product they are representing as a token, and allowing interested ppl to pledge/buy tokens directly on the page. Just an idea... I think even a simple version would be useful at this stage though.

Would this be technically possible to do?

I actually have that on my to-do list.  Since we can record chat and display names, there's no reason we can't include bios of issuers that we're viewing + instructions, etc.  I'm thinking a similar window on the left (like the chat box) except it'll show a profile of the current token issuer.

It'll take me a while though as my schedule's been packed.  Took me forever just to get the display names up.

Awesome. If I knew anything about programming, I'd love to help - I can imagine it is a lot of work!

Hey, why don't you issue a token to help fund the development? ;)

It's time, not money.  Takes more time for me to find and teach/explain to someone how to code for Ripple + then check their code than to just do it myself.

I see. I was thinking of funding to hire another dev or similar, but i suppose there aren't too many who are clued in about Ripple. There might be some parts with the UI or other front-end stuff where others could help, chip in? I wouldn't know though as it's not my field, so forgive the ignorance.

The network is basically a database.  Anything you can do with a database you can do with Ripple or blockchain.  So private messaging - same way.  You'd have to do the work of encrypting or figuring out the method.

Could you implement chat this within payment channels so as not to spam the ledger with nonfinancial transactions?
