A lot of "old finance" guys had been wanting to short BTC for basically all of 2017.  The fact that the futures went live at the top (or perhaps hastened the arrival of the top) added to the downward pressure.

Also, Futures allow a whale to "pre-sell' his BTC without impacting the current price.  However when he delivers BTC against his short, the buyer of that future is stuck at an unreasonable price in a bear market.  The receiver's only choice is to sell quickly at a loss.

The fact that it's the exact day is likely coincidence, but the timing of live futures trading has definitely exacerbated the decline.  Futures is a pro's market.  Crypto is mostly retail. Any time you put retail money up against pro money, the retail guy loses.
