JennaB
Dear Fellow Ripplers and Crypto Experts, Can someone please help me by providing DETAILED step-by-step advice on the following?: 1.) What is the SAFEST way to transfer XRP from a Paper Wallet (Cold Storage) to Ledger Nano S WITHOUT EXPOSING my private key/s on the internet? This is my goal. 2.) Am I able to transfer XRP directly from the paper wallet (cold storage) to the Ledger Nano S OR will I be required to transfer the XRP to an intermediary desktop wallet first (such as RIPPEX or TOAST) and then transfer XRP from the intermediary wallet (such as RIPPEX or TOAST) to Ledger Nano S? FYI: I am not interested in using a hosted wallet such as Gatehub. 3.) Assuming that I need to transfer to an intermediary desktop wallet first (such as Rippex or Toast), is there a way to accomplish this WITHOUT EXPOSING my private key/s on the internet? If so, how? 4.) When transferring XRP from a paper wallet to a desktop wallet (such as Rippex or Toast), will my original paper wallet keys (public and private) stay the same or will the desktop wallet provide new keys? Also, when transferring XRP from a desktop wallet (such as Rippex or Toast) to the Ledger Nano S, will my keys (public and private) change again or will they remain the same? I searched online and the tutorials but could not find exactly what I'm looking for. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help. manateehunter
Nano ledger creates a new wallet, it can't be the same one as your paper wallet, and it's very safe as long as the computer you're transferring from is safe, even if it's not the transaction speed is so quick that an intercept is all but impossible unless you're trying to move money in waves. Valhalla_Guy
You can create and sign (encrypt) transactions offline using the Ripple Desktop wallet. Download the zip file - Go offline (completely dark) - Unzip and install the wallet app, launch it and import your private key, and create the wallet file - You can then create your transaction and save the transaction file to your harddrive, while still offline. Close the desktop wallet app. (Clear caches and histories if you prefer) Reboot PC with Internet access. You can then open the Desktop wallet app, and import the transaction you saved earlier. Basically this is it- I believe I am using the Rippex desktop wallet SW (Win PC 64Bit) I have only done this once, for the same reason (Moved some XRP to Ledger) No expert here, but I felt this was a safe approach, and it worked. manatee is also correct; you must leave at least 20 xrp in the paper wallet. JennaB
Thank you both (Valhalla_Guy & ManateeHunter) for the info. I'm happy that the Ledger Nano S creates new keys. The method of using Rippex Offline is a great way to do the transfer without exposing your private keys online. A similar method I recently learned is to install Rippex on a computer that never goes online and create all the transactions using private keys on this machine then transfer the transaction file using a clean USB to another computer that also has Rippex installed and is online to do the XRP transfer. If you are doing more than one transaction, then I believe you have to manually change/increase the sequence number (settings/network settings) by 1 while offline. Maybe some the experts can help shed some light on the sequence numbers...
JennaB
Can someone provide some clarity about updating/changing the sequence numbers when creating a transaction using Rippex offline? Do you need to change/increase the sequence number for the FIRST transaction AND all subsequent transactions OR only for all subsequent transactions? Also, is the proper way to update the sequence number to simply increase it by 1. For instance, if the existing sequence number is 4, then do i change it to 5? You can put your acct into this : https://ripple.com/build/ripple-info-tool/ In the account info box, click the + to expand account data and you will see your latest sequence number, add 1 for your next transaction. (if you see Sequence : 4, the tx you are working on will need to be 5) JennaB
JennaB
Thank you very much Kakoyla. This link is very helpful. Is it safe to assume that I input my public address into this tool to retrieve my account info?

You can use Toast to perform your offline transaction as well: Edited February 22, 2018 by Guest
