Thanks for this reply.

If I disable the trust lines,  will it have any effect on my available balance (the amount I can play with)?

yes so if you disable the trustline it will increase you range by 5XRP everytime you disable it.

The Ripple protocol requires that each Ripple account hold a small amount of XRP at all times. This is called reserve and its purpose is spam protection (i.e. prevent malicious users from creating a large number of accounts). In this regard, its purpose is akin to bitcoin mining fees, or Ripple transaction fees.

The main reserve requirements are:

20 XRP per account (always required),

5 XRP per each trustline* (connected gateway).

5 XRP per each open order.

So if your account holds 50 XRP, has two trustlines issued (eg. for GateHub's EUR and GateHub Fifth's BTC) and one open order, the required reserve is 20 + 2 x 5 + 5 XRP = 35 XRP; the remaining 15 XRP are at your disposal.

You can find more details about XRP reserves here.

*Trustline can be removed by clicking on an "x" button next to it. Make sure its value is 0 beforehand.

I'm happy to hear this.

is there any way to view the amount of xrp I have available for use.  I would like to be able to know exactly what I have available aside the wallet and trustline reserves.

Dont think there is a easy way of seeing except for counting it yourself:
Example for wallet, say I have 50 XRP:

  • Standard is 20XRP
  • I have 2x gateway -> 2x 5XRP = 10XRP
  • I have no open order -> 0x 5XRP = 0XRP

So my reserve is 20+10 = 30 XRP so if I have for example 50 I can only use 20 XRP to trade with.

Gateway check (go to home and check the gateways which are listed):

Open order check (go to wallet and click on tab "Open Orders"):

Thanks for these detailed replies.  You have put my mind at ease.  I appreciate this a lot.

I just noticed something which I think I should verify:does disabling a trust line automatically disconnect the gateway? My thinking is that a trust line is not the same as a gateway.

Each trustline is an "Connected" gateway, so you will always have a whole list which you can connect to but if you are not connected it should not show up on my gateway.

I would think it automatically disconnect because you can't be connected to a gateway with out having a trustline (i asume).

5 XRP per each trustline* (connected gateway)

Hi! I just transferred some ETH to Gatehub to buy XRP (first deposit). The transaction is confirmed on the blockchain over four hours ago, but nothing shows up at Gatehub. Also, they don't seem to reply on support questions. Should I be worried or just give it some more time? I'm reading a lot of negative things on Gatehub.

PS. I don't have any good Samaritans who will front me 20XRP. I transferred 0.3 ETH so that should be enough to cover the 20XRP, right?

OK cool I get it ;)

So to start with a clean slate. Can some one advice me on how to go about with the trust lines? I keep getting the "unkown error" and I am kind of getting nervous, because the ETC I sended is somwhere in "limbo" now ;)

Tnx, and yes I am a noob but eager to learn the ways of the masters :P gheghegge

0.3 ETH = ~90 XRP

If you wallet is not active and not trust line set then the 0.3ETH will just be on hold untill you wallet is activated and trustline is set.

Wallet activation + 1x trust line you need at least 25XRP

So you get the unkown error because you wallet is still deactivated.

To activate the wallet you need to sent at least 20XRP to become active and unfortunately it will only activate by sending XRP and not any other currency.
Dont forget you also need 5XRP above the 20XRP to set a trustline ETC, so in total you need at least 25XRP.

Your ETC will be just waiting untill you wallet is activated and the trust line is set, then it will take about ~24 hours before they show up.

But my wallet can't be activated until the ETH is there, because it's my first deposit, right? So I just have to wait - hope, pray - for the ETH to get there and then convert it to XRP. But if my wallet is not active, how do I convert the ETH to XRP? Am I in a catch-22? :D
