How long can you NOT plug in your nano-s?

So, with ripple going the way it is, i have my zerps on my Nano-s, and im thinking more and more about going to my bank and putting it in a safety deposit box for safekeeping.  It sounds crazy but i would seriously be butthurt if my apartment burned down or got broken into and i lost it all because i didnt take precautions.  But i digress.

My nano may be sitting there for a very long time however.  How long can i leave it unplugged from a computer?  Does it need to "charge" at all?.  Id also hate to lose my investment because the internal memory ran out of a charge.

May be a silly question but when were talking numbers as big as I suspect XRP will get, i dont think there ARE silly questions.

It's an interesting question. Probably not for years, but if you've got a lot on there then just plug it in every six months to be on the safe side! :D

Oh...and keep a backup one...

Excellent idea. Do it. But make a Nano S clone before hand. And as long as you don't need access any time soon, put the clone in a separate bank's SDB. Use different keys/pins on each, and cut the page in half to split the codes up and swap the codes for each device (label them though), and remember you swapped them ;) !!!

Make a backup of each half of the code(s) and bury it somewhere randomly remote (that you remember! GPS it!) but inside a protected casing that's waterproof and strong.

That should help you sleep at night! ;)

Not sure on this – someone correct me if I'm wrong, but, I think it only uses power from the USB of a computer, and doesn't have its own internal battery power, or if so, it's a small temporary one and can't be used to power the software, it's just for minor internal operations.

Correct - the power comes from the USB port only.

I have left mine plugged in for 30 min no issues didnt realize i left it on. However after like 5 min its goes to "sleep" with a screen saver with something in french i believe. When you touch a button it asks for your PIN and you can get back in. All while still powered on!

I  know of someone on reddit that put 5K into XRP at like 85 cents and left it in a saftey box at his bank for the next 5 years. So its not a bad idea in my opinion.

If your nano ledger S got fried by a freak power surge it wouldn't matter.
If armed thugs broke into your apartment to steal your nano S it wouldn't matter.
If you misplaced or lost the Nano S, wouldn't matter.

There are no coins stored on the Nano S.

The only thing you need to keep safe is your seed. From this, you can recreate your wallet from scratch. Store the seed in a safe if you like. That's probably not a terrible idea. Some people just store it in their heads. That's also pretty safe (and arguably the safest), except in the case of amnesia.

Forgive my ignorance, when you say seed, to what exactly are you referring?.

I'm referring to the recovery phrase.

The Nano S does not store any coins, so you can recreate your wallet any time you like from any computer anywhere in the world, so long as you have your recovery phrase.

To put it another way, the recovery phrase is the wallet, not the Nano S.

small lockable waterproof/shockproof case with the tile tracking device inside, then inside a small fire proof lock box, hide the box where no one would ever look

I thought I was being safe. This is all in to really protect your investments.
