The Nano gets its power from the USB connection so it must be plugged in to enter the pin.

AHHHH. thanks!

You unplug the nano because when you open the "Ledger Manager" or "Ripple Ledger Wallet" you have to first enter your passcode for it to be recognized. it isn't like you enter your passcode once and unlocked the device to be used across your computer. consider it a safety feature

...which i dont get. do we sign up with a username /passcode for the wallet too? thanks for your help

I loaded my wallet with the xrp I bought last week.. Already had various transactions to it. However as soon as I refreshed my balance it was 0.

Can anyone please help me in regard to what to do?

Ledger has been have a few problems with their app. It glitches out sometimes, but not to worry - your balance still exists, you may need to update the app. While it's open, you could also unplug your ledger, and plug it back in, hit the refresh button a few times.
