Hello all

I have located my old ripple-wallet.txt file, however, I cannot recall my password. Having tried multiple times through the ripple desktop client, I have not had any luck. Is there any way I can get my XRP back? Many thanks

The thing that matters is the secret key (starts with an 's')

If you have that you can just recreate a wallet.  So...   do you have it?

Alas, I do not. I have been searching high and low for it to no avail. are there any other possibilities? I think I havbe a chunck of XRP and I am willing to pay someone a success fee to help me gain access

Essentially no I'm afraid.  Without either the wallet password or the Ripple secret key you are left with a decryption problem.

I have no real idea of how achievable that is but I am betting it is likely beyond an individuals capacity...   perhaps beyond anyone's at this stage.

There may be some hope if your password was trivial but I think most software won't allow you to use too trivial a password.

Perhaps a cryptography expert could assist.

Many thanks, could someone at Ripple help, do you think?

Ripple are not involved in that software and do not support it.

There are a few experts on here that might be willing to offer services...   I don't know if that's a realistic hope or not...   I will mention a couple here in case they can help.   Perhaps for a fee.

@someonelineguy No sorry there is nothing that can be done. The encryption is not something that can be reversed. Like Mr. @PunishmentOfLuxury said, if it were easy then it would not say much about the wallet software. Your other problem is that I have never heard of any software that uses a .txt file to store the data. normally it is a .dat file so be sure that you really have the correct file. If I were your bad guy and wanted to steal your wallet, I would do the following:

First find out what software you use to manage your wallets. I would have a higher success breaking you and your password than I would guessing the Secret Key. To guess the secret key, I would first need to know the software, the version and some other factors, just so that I can understand how that key is generated. Then I could start but it would still take a really long time.

So The next best thing is you.  You need to go through your life and write down every password you have ever used. If you did not originally write this password down, then the chance is that you used one that you remember. Write down your passwords from work, friends, your accounts, social account, your windows passwords and all others. Write them down so that you can try different variations of them and then mark them off of a list. If no success start next with event and important aspects of your life. Write them down and try again.

That is the best that you are going to do. Also try to use the same software that you might have used back when you created it. Try to get the current version of that time if possible, It may be that the programmer used a different input vector before than now so decryption may not even be possible with today's version. There is no way to be sure without contacting the developer or observing the code.

Otherwise, cracking that file would be extremely costly and would also reveal intimate aspects of your life. You would have to pay a White Hat Hacker to make you their target. They would proceed to do the worst of what I just told you, only so that they can get a lead on your life and what you may have possibly been thinking at the time you created the file. And even then, it is only effective if the password is related to you. If you use military grade passwords which are each only used in one location at a time, a min 16 characters and multiple character types, then there is no chance at all.

That is the best I can tell ya bud. BE VERY careful about anyone that says they can do it for you. They may be phishing for your private data and for you to give it to them voluntarily. I know this answer sucks, but that is all there is.

Perfect answer @Xilobyte

Friend of mine had a similar issue with other coins, worth some real money now. Luckily his brother is an ethical hacker (what are the odds of that), needs to dig in several layers and although they made some progress because the disk was still available (2015), it is a slow and rocky road.

Good luck @someonelineguy

I have heard of such a software: the official ripple wallet.

@someonelineguy - if you still have some idea what the password and user name could be, there might be some hope, if you don't remember anything then it is not possible to open this file unless the password was very weak.
