@JoelKatz what does Ripple actually sell? How do you guys make money? Is it XRP?

Ripple's revenue prospects fall into two categories. One category is products and services related to ILP and RCL such as Ripple Connect. The other category is increasing the value of XRP such as by making it competitive as a vehicle currency.

I thought they were selling ILP.

I imagine that the ILP works like this.
Interledger_network_gateway2_Ripple_Ethereum6.jpg
So they might be integrating Ripple Connect to the system of the banks such as CGI's Intelligent Gateway or ECB's TARGET2.
Other FIs and Bitcoin exchange would need to pay to connect to the system.
They also sell Ripple Stream for the trading client of FX.
It's all my imagination, though.

That's interesting, and it's leading to a lot of fundamental questions. I would recommend https://epicenterbitcoin.com/podcast/060/ as a starting point. Some say that Bitcoin (ignoring the scalability issues, PoW etc.) is a real currency that ultimately will have the stability characteristics of a major fiat currency, while others say that will/can never happen with any cryptocurrency. Robert Sams (qualified expert) is of the opinion that there are inherent flaws with any cryptocurrency. Nonetheless, cryptocurrencies can be stabilized, and he outlined the principles in a white paper. Maker DAO is following up on this as well for Ethereum (DAI as a stable token). A so called cryptocurrency as they are now is better defined as a token for a DAO than being called a currency. BTC, ETH, XRP are really DAO tokens, and a few more internal steps are needed to utilize them as a vehicle currency, i.e. a stable currency.

@yandel, what problem is a "pegged" currency trying to solve?  Instability?  Okay.... there are already products on the market for BTC as an example, where you don't have to "hold" BTC as a consumer to use it for payment.  And that is the premise of the entire whitepaper quoted at the bottom of article in the link you sent - that consumers won't use BTC because of instability of price.

Any technical solution to a "problem" (is instability really that big of a problem?) that can be solved by an easy-to-understand business solution should be set aside.

In the context of Ripple it would lead to much tighter spreads, that's the importance. If a pegged token, let's say the DAI (SDR) only varies a little bit from the spot price (can be calculated), then there will be immediate arbitrage by market participants. There will be buy/sell orders in a very narrow range that accounts to providing liquidity for Ripple. As it is now XRP does not provide for really good spreads for payment transactions. Even with BTC it is not that great, the liquidity is distributed over various exchanges and is not constant. A proof of concept for a pegged coin is Nubits, if the coin falls under the US$ there are bots buying it, and if it is above the bots sell it (arbitrage). That's what is bringing liquidity to Ripple in spreads suitable for payment transactions. I believe the pegged coins can have spreads <0.1% around the spot price with high volume.
