Each Sunday I watch CBS Sunday Morning - it has nothing to do with crypto, but hey, you've got to have some balance, right? Just as I was about to switch it off near the end, I heard the announcer saying something about a "local currency" for the island of Sardinia! It's called the "Sardex." Right away, I'm thinking crypto-currency, so after the broadcast, I do some research on it, and was sorely dissappointed to learn that it's a credit-based system (yes!), but that it relies on a centralized database (no!). Anyway, just letting people know that the whole concept of "local currencies" received some favorable coverage in the mainstream press today - it's rare and noteworthy! Here's where I found out that it's a centralized database: https://www.ft.com/content/cf875d9a-5be6-11e5-a28b-50226830d644 Even though its not distributed tech, it's still an interesting development if it signals what communities could do in the next financial crisis!
