Dave sold some of his XRP stash for over $10 MIL.
If I had 10 MIL dollars in XRP, I would sell right now and be done, regardless of what I think XRP is likely to do in the future.  That's life changing money.  Why risk it for a chance at more?  I don't need more, no matter how confident I am that XRP will go higher.  Because no matter how confident I am, I could be always be wrong.
Now lets take it a step further.  What if I had 20 mil dollars of XRP?  Of course I would sell at least 10MIL.  Then maybe keep the other 10 MIL in XRP?  Best of both worlds.  I'm set, PLUS have investment for even more money.
Let's go further.  What if I had 30 MIL dollars of XRP?  First, that would never happen, because I would have sold a bunch of it at 10 or 20 mil.. but lets just say I did.  I would sell.
Now, Let's take David's example.  The guy had 16 MILLION XRP for a USD value of about 50 MILLION USD when he sold SOME of his XRP. (10 MIL USD worth.)
Why are we talking about this, again?
Remember, Dave sold XRP from ONE of his long standing XRP accounts.  The account had been established well enough in advance to be able to count as capital gains and a MUCH lower tax rate.  How do we know that he didn't BUY BACK the same amount he sold when the price dropped back to 30 cents?  HE likely WOULD NOT have placed it back into the same wallet and muddied what was newly acquired XRP with long holding XRP.. especially when he knew he was going to need to sell a little more to pay the tax man the following year (he sold another $1M USD worth of XRP on April 14th this year).
He likely would have put his newly purchased XRP into a different wallet that you all aren't tracking and being a new holding period of that money so that it, too, could have been easily identifiable as capital gains in the future.
The point is, Dave is human.  He has a family.  He has grandkids.  He had many millions of dollars in XRP.  He sold some now, and is set for life no matter what else happens with XRP.  However, if XRP goes moon, he still has more XRP than probably anyone else in this forum.  So he's set.  He derisked, got many millions.  Is still stocked.
One thing XRP can't buy you is TIME.  He might as well start enjoying his money, because he can't buy more time later in life to enjoy it then.
His comments on twitter are about the criticism he got for selling.  He's trying to explain it, but he shouldn't have to.  Him selling was not in any way related to his beliefs of what XRP might do in the future.  It was about derisking and getting millions now for his family.
People need to leave the guy alone.

Kalarie reacted to Zedy44 in Ripple is acquiring MoneyGram?
Well Ripple is a blockchain software technology company.  Ripple buying MG would be like Uber buying Chipotle so they can use UberEats as the standard Chipolte delivery service.  Would that work to drive revenue and value into their UberEats service?  Sure.  But it would be a huge risk to take on a second business they have no experience with just to integrate one of their core products in day-to-day operations.
It would be more likely that Ripple could enter an exclusive partnership with MG for full stack integration of their current and future software product roll outs.  If they did end up buying MG they would keep both company's separate and likely replace a few MG board members with Ripple board members and do the same kind of integration I described in the last sentence.
It doesn't make sense for Ripple to outright buy MG unless they feel they can create a new (profitable) revenue stream from not just a full stack integration of features, but actually owning the core business with everything integrated.

Kalarie reacted to lysistrada in Former SWIFT employee comments on impact of Ripple
I think the Ripple versus Swift mentality just plays into our human desire to bifurcate issues in an overly simple manner that mentally is no more complex than "Ripple Good.  Swift Bad."  I think the former employee's answer makes a lot of sense.
In reality, the Swift messaging competitor of xCurrent - to me / in my opinion - was never the key ingredient.  It was a tool to force the hand of banks and Swift to put themselves on a platform that could ultimately use xRapid to instantly settle transactions.  The following is probably a facile analogy, since I can't know the underlying motivations actually present, but you may recall that Google Fiber was speculated to be an initiative to make other ISP's be competitive with regard to bandwidth costs for consumer level service.  I don't know if that's true, but I do know that my neighborhood is now wired for Google Fiber and Google Fiber is now one of three choices present for me to have gigabit download speeds for cheaper than getting 50mbs down was 5 years ago.  Everything in my area now more efficiently runs the Google-driven ecosytem that runs many aspects of my life.
So returning to the above.  Ripple creates xCurrent and makes banks very aware of it, but it's largely FI's and more fringe banks that don't have massive systems just living and dependent upon tremendous legacy systems that can enact this technology first.  This will allow these companies to compete with the larger more established institutions on price - ultimately - because the future end result of xCurrent + xRapid will allow these fringe entities to be more efficient and enjoy better margins while providing faster service.  The banks must respond and we are seeing that already.
In response, Swift creates GPI which - as it turns out - can interface with Corda which uses XRP as its native settlement mechanism.
This is what I have observed and it's entirely consistent - as best I can tell - with the former employee's explanation.  I am certainly over-simplifying a number of things here.

I'm starting to think banks may not even be relevant in the future. The old guard is being pushed aside.  When brokerages waited too long to start offering crypto, crypto exchanges started offering stocks and etf's. Why would a millennial then even sign up for a traditional brokerage account if they can get their crypto, their ETF's, and their stocks via someone like Abra?

and now, crypto is bringing banking instead of waiting on banks to bring crypto.

In Ripple's case I would guess that lack of regulation certainty is the holdup on adoption/high volume use.  I haven't seen anything about another tech being adopted that works better, so it would make sense that the problem is most likely not the product, but the environment.

aw man, that's a lot of reading if you don't follow them all the time.  I felt encouraged scrolling through the posts and seeing a lot of profiles that still see active.  I honestly thought after last year the number of pre fall of 2017 run up hodlers left on this board would be down to like you, me, and a chicken, bull and pickle.  Changing your profile pic threw me for a bit though.  I'm slow these days.

I mostly check in to play the forecasting/guessing games, and see if any cool new has popped up.  I don't believe the price is going above $5 this year for sure, but that's because the whole space is moving sideways right now.  Then again, I'm a long term hodler targeting 2029 for potentially my first sell date, and I think XRP has more potential utility than any other crypto, so I guess I am saying I think the price will be over $10, just not this year.  I'm a little disappointed BG123 didn't work out though.  That was some great conspiracy fun last year.

@Staigera this is why even though I very much believe in XRP and have a big stack already, I refuse to buy more.  I do not want to be making the kind of post you made.  I'm very comfortable with my XRP position.  I've been buying precious metals as wealth preservation lately, with very small positions in other cryptos as out-and-out gambles.  Do I believe if I drop yet another $10,000 onto XRP today, that it will eventually turn into $50,000?  Yes, I do believe that.  So why don't I do it? Because I am STILL prepared for XRP to go to zero with my current stack.  I know that sounds like a tired old cliché, but when you TRULY can reconcile with the idea of your investment going to zero, then it's an easy hold.  There's no discomfort.  Life is too short for that kind of worry.  I enjoy investing in other things.  I also enjoy reading up on XRP news.  It's all good.  25c tomorrow? Disappointing but I'm still fine and I get on with my life as normal.  No puke on my shirt.

I don't know anyone that is making money on mining unless they have upgraded all their equipment to the new 28 TH machines and even they haven't made their money back yet.  So you're plan was to invest with someone who is stealing tens of thousands of $ in electricity.  Why not just rob a bank then,  no investment and very high return and just about the same odds you'll end up in jail next to the guy with the AMG.

Missed this one in 2018 and want to make sure I don't miss the boat again.
I'm bearish this year on price because something about the development cycle suggests to me that we are in a consolidation and re-evaluation phase for the tech (i.e. BORRRRRING for traders). I don't believe BTC has bottomed and I'm also expecting major shake-outs amongst some of the large exchanges. I've come to accept that we're in this for the long haul, my friends. That's perfectly fine by me because there's so much work to do on the technical and legal side of things.
That said, I have possibly one of the worst track records for price prediction on this forum so for goodness sake, don't trade on these numbers!

still here.  I'll bet @Chewiecoin is too.  Pretty sure if you look at the Hodl to $100 thread 90% of those peeps were talking in terms of years, or even a decade.  If you threw what should amount to 'change' in your savings plan at XRP, why sell at $0.29?  At that point ride to $0 or ride to retirement, but just ride
