    US Banks are Getting Frantic

    Alright guys, its been a hell of a week for Ripple and crypto in general. We are witnessing the beginning of a banking revolution- its only going to get crazier as we head into 2020. PART 1: Let me start this post by telling you a conversation I had with my mother, an executive loan officer and branch manager of a regional bank in the south: After the usual mother/son conversation, I asked her how her job was going since she just came back from family leave. APPARENTLY.... "The top executives are freaking out. The projections for loan income are completely off due to the FED announcement." If you're not in the US, basically the central bank wants to lower interest rates next month. The effect? Here is an excerpt from a Yahoo Finance article: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/fed-interest-rate-cut-horizon-121512567.html So, US banks will be struggling to make the quota for this fiscal half because the banks projected the rate to actually increase rather than decline. This meant that many banks gave adjustable rate loans to borrowers in hopes that the prime rate would increase over time. PART 2: Responses from other banks have ranged from nonchalant to panic As you can imagine, banks want to keep a lid on their panic state. Most have released statements that say they were prepared for the rate decline. PART 3: ENTER CRYPTO- Libra is announced, and the Moneygram Move Okay so, unless you live under a rock, the news this week has been amazing. Facebook announces Libra under much criticism. The announcement had a few effects: Whether you love it or hate it, it has helped bring crypto into the spotlight this week. All press is good press for crypto, that much is true. Regulators have sprung into action. Already making statements about the regulation of Libra and crypto in general. A final effect is that banks will be looking for an alternative or an edge against their competitors. Ripple and Xrapid already exist and has gone through extensive trials over the past 5 years. Brad Garlinghouse has already made the statement that Ripple has has a "record week" due to the Libra Announcement: BOOM- Thank you, Facebook. Ripple is also in the spotlight for the Moneygram Deal. MoneyGram's Stock rose over 150% and huge announcements for new corridors were made as moneygram is expanding their footprint in India. Ripple is making other moves as SBI Remit and SCB Thailand are featured in their Paying Forward promo videos (check twitter, i'm too lazy at this point to embed them lol) Conclusion TLDR: Banks are hurting from the potential FED rate drop and crypto appears this week to banks as a way to cut costs. The financial transformation is on the horizon and is approaching fast! If your read all that, congratulations. You're amazing!

    I've seen a number of youtube personalities discuss the idea of the XRP escrow being preallocated for use by global central banks as collateral for the issuance of digital fiat currency and effectively creating a montary value 'reset.' I've gone on their streams and tried to indicate a number of issues that rise with the use of digital assets as collateral, but I do think excitement has taken over the space and folks are just not taking the time to see this through. Somewhere back in the past, I wrote comments about how I thought companies like OMNI were really important for the XRP ecosystem, because they were providing redeemable contracts on the XRP ledger attached to tangible assets. When you establish a contract whereby an asset becomes redeemable in XRP - for example, by making a deposit for a leased object redeemable in XRP, or issuing a loan that is payable in XRP - you are increasing the market value of XRP by the amount of the redeemable asset. This is one of the thing that make open and free exchange markets so valuable to fiat economics - there are tangible assets, services, contracts, etc. that are redeemable. Take a 5 USD silver note - that was redeemable to the bearer, at one time, for $5 worth of silver. Asset-backed currencies have value because their notes are redeemable memos that can be settled for real assets. Now consider the role that crypto lending in CDP or collateral debt positions play in transforming the landscape. When you have a mortgage on the book in your name that is secured by the home you have possession of, there are limitations to what you can do with that home. A home with liens against it is taken out of the inventory pool. It no longer contributes to the available assets that can be redeemed with fiat currency. In many ways, a cap on tangible productive assets (and people) introduces a cap to the aggregate value of the fiat currency of a country. No assets to trade = no monetary value. Money is worth nothing when there is nothing left to buy. This is a significant issue for the digital asset space, because you have the transformation of asset classes into representative units of exchange (securitize assets, tokenized assets) that produce lien-like impositions on the underlying asset, and representative debt position that use digital assets as collateral (CDPs). And you will very soon have cascading combinations of both. One day, you will have the ability to take Apple stock in your portfolio tokenized, and you will be able to draw digital asset credit lines based on the deposit of those tokens in your digital wallet. As the tokenization economy expands, more and more conventional stocks will be encumbered, translating the stock exchange mechanism from one of stock trading to one of securitized token trading. It will not be possible, one day, to own actual stock. It will only be possible to own and trade representative tokens of a given stock on various platforms. The impact this will have on the price during the shift will be volatile and then normal as volume shifts markets. Today, you can deposit your tokens with a company like Nexo, get a credit line advance and spend it. This is non-taxable - its secured credit. But this also takes those assets out of circulation - staked tokens that have liens against them are off the exchanges, so far as I can tell. I have asked a question on Quora and requested David to respond regarding hte potential of rehypothecation of assets on the ledger. For those who are unfamiliar with the practice, and how it contributed to the housing bubble and the inevitable collapse of the hyperinflated price bubble - the best way to think about it is like this: blockchain has many features that prevent the double-spend problem from occurring. Rehypothecation of collateral assets is a form of intentional double-spend - where the same underlying collateral asset is treated as if it is owned by two different parties (or more) at the same time. Max Keiser has done videos discussing how rehypothecation has been used between physical delivery and metals and paper metals contracts to manipulate the price of precious metals. So assuming that blockchain ledgers, as a feature, make rehypothecation impossible - this single feature alone makes digital currency one of the most powerful asset classes in history - if ownership cannot be subverted and the books built on it can be made that much more sound, it is an absolute game changer and you can bet that banks are doing whatever they can to allocate and build their positions in it, even if they are dormant and waiting on regulation to actually put those assets into motion. They are buying the fields but waiting for zoning clearance to build houses. What to do in the meantime? These banks are incentivized to keep prices low and sideways, particularly after a protracted bear market where investors have hyped in and are now overleveraged. Companies like Nexo (not saying they will do this) will be very clear about how safe their custody solutions are, and how large financial powerhouses like Lloyd's of London will back their deposits. People will read articles about how they can use a fusion of dollar cost average in bear phases and collateral debt reinvesting during bull phases to grow their stacks without adding more capital in changing market conditions. But consider the impact this ever-increasing CDP market will have on scarcity of inventory, and the inflated pricing effects this creates for deflationary digital assets. More and more liens against digital assets that are not available for rehypothecation and are effectively digitally segregated from corporate funds are locked away from retail markets. Sure, the debt contracts can be traded - and you know this is going to be a new source of banking revenue. But if digital assets are not subject to the same dubious supply issues as precious metals, price increases are inevitable. This is the first wave of the slow bull drive, but it is not the real issue. In times of crises, we have already seen that the transition from asset-backed currency to others results in the confiscation of real assets when times get tough. Owning gold can be made illegal illegal. You can be asked to forcible sell your ounces of gold and silver for face value prices, only to watch the values of metals skyrocket once they are in government possession. History has taught this lesson, are cryptocurrency investors paying attention? Mark my words, as more financial institutions get involved in the business of operating digital asset holding accounts backed by the FDIC we will see unusual shortages, hacks and losses that will amount to voluntary digital asset confiscation. Sorry, your assets are in another castle! ~the FDIC. If I enter into agreement with Nexo by depositing my funds that the collateral assets I yield for consideration are protected to market value by Lloyd's of London, make no mistake that in the event of a fiscal crisis or pending shift in economic situations I will not be able to withdraw my digital asset, but will instead be bought out at market price by Lloyd's - who will then own my digital asset and I have cash. I'm not picking on Nexo - I use them a little bit. I may use them more when I wish to cash out without cashing out. I think the service that they and Binance and others will offer is a valuable service. But I keep the big bags away from these services. Because there will be a voluntary confiscation event where you will have your digital asset deposits cashed out because the terms allow for it. Folks will go to their account one day and see the cash equivalent of all of their crypto assets in their account. This may be caused by a manipulated price event that allows these financial institutions to liquidate your positions to pay off outstanding debt. It may be a "massive security event" that forces insurance to buy out your positions. PR folks are creative. Terms of service that include bail-in clauses are not the only tripwire to watch out for for investors right now in finance. But to go back, there does not need to be a preallocation event for this to occur - it is already starting now. Go look at nexo's growth numbers, just as an example because they seem to be playing a leading role in the hype behind crypto loans. It would only take a few major household name banks to start offering remarkable credit lines and paying out on crypto loan investments to pull many of these assets off the market while stablecoins are floating around. The volume of encumbered assets of just a few major financial institutions would be enough to significantly increase the scarcity of inventory for most of the top ten assets - and who knows how far down the chain this value would trickle as the top ten coins grow out of reach. The idea that XRP - the escrow - of 55 billion XRP is preallocated to banks and slowly being released to prevent scarcity from spiking is an interesting one, but seems both unrealistic and unnecessary. It would drastically cut the supply of available inventory for trade and ledger functionality - and that is likely going to happen anyway as crypto loans take off and fill the economic role that housing did in the 2003-2007 era. It's not xrapid that is going to explode the price - its the lockup of digital assets in loans. Loans people are taking out now because they needed that seed capital - or someo f it - or they just don't want to sell and deal with taxable events. Etc. Etc. Eventually there will be a time when the underlying digital assets we are able to buy today will simply not be available for purchase - only their derivative products. It's going to be a totally remade financial landscape. And if digital assets do become part of a collateral plan to convert to digital currency, hold on to your butts and resist every temptation/trick to sell until you are absolutely ready to let your assets go - I definitely assume that any crypto I put up for loan collateral - even if I have no outstanding credit lines - will eventually be converted to fiat without my consent before this is all over. But those cold storage hodl bags... not your keys, not your crypto.

    List: The Voices in Bob’s Head

    Sorry to disappear for so long. The week turned out to be more involved than I thought. Just as a quick recap, I've been fighting prostate cancer. I had radiation treatment, but my PSA numbers have not responded in the way they were expected to. (down) Unfortunately, they have been trending up. This is quite puzzling to the doctor's because I caught the cancer early. It was also a less aggressive variant that should have responded to treatment easily. That has been coupled to some nagging discomfort in the area that won't seem to go away either. So last week was a bit stress inducing. I had two full body scans last Tuesday and Wednesday. The first was a bone scan and the second was a full body CT scan. The goal was to make sure none of the cancer had escaped and spread. Medicine being what it is, the scans had to be done, read by a radiologist, then relayed to my oncologist. I had to wait on the final results until this Tuesday. So in between, Janet and I decided to mitigate the stress by driving to Baton Rouge, LA to meet the awesome XRP Community there. Many thanks to @RippleWraith for setting up an awesome dinner meetup. And even more thanks to everyone who showed up despite the torrential rain and flooding happening last week. RippleWraith even brought an amazing birthday cake to top off the evening. It turns out, it is only an hour and a half more of pouring rain to make it New Orleans. So Janet and I spent my Birthday there. Her gambling (she won) and me drinking (I won!) We managed to get out of there Saturday morning just before the flooding got to NOLA. Turns out only six hours more rain to make it back to Houston! We ended up going straight to my mothers to pick up Puccini, then stayed over Saturday night to be there for Mother's Day on Sunday. Of course, the endless rain and driving broke something on the car. So Monday meant fixing that. Then staying over longer to see the doctor on Tuesday. Good news is, it turns out, all the scans are clean! That was a huge relief. We still don't know what is causing the numbers to stay up, but it is seeming likely that it may be prostatitis. I've got a long course of antibiotics to take now and more testing and followups later in the summer. So all in all, it looks like I'll survive. So now that I'm finally home and back online onward to the first study group session. I'll post about that in another thread. Sorry to keep everyone waiting. But at least, XRP has been trending up in the meantime!

From his earliest days as founder and CEO of E-Loan and Prosper, Chris Larsen is a name you know as always trying to solve thee financial world’s hardest problems. And creating an Internet of Value where money moves as fast as data, has been his passion since he co-founded Ripple in 2012. As executive chairman, Chris remains focused on realizing the promise of Blockchain to improve global payments and bring people around the world closer together. Founder and managing partner of leading venture capital fund, Core Innovation Capitol, Arjan Schütte is going to chat to Chris about that journey as one of fintech’s most successful entrepreneurs and his insights on the Internet Of Value and the past, present, and future of money. What a way to close. Please make them feel very welcome. Arjan Schütte: So here we are, what a delight. Thank you all for being with us. You have in fact been a financial services visionary of our generation. You are known for having started Ripple, but as introducer said, you have been around the block a couple times, you started E-Loan in the 90’s and I was humoured to hear that Ken Lynn the former CEO of Credit-Karma was brought in from that invention. After that Prosper was started in 2005. So take us into you and how what from your personal life from these financial innovations that you’ve been working on for a couple decades. Chris Larsen: First of all thank you for being so supportive. Arjan has been so supporting for what seems like decades. I’d like to thank you for that. I guess a big motivator for me to be honest has been anger and bitterness with the financial industry. And that kind of runs back to my late father who was an airline mechanic who worked super hard but we were always short of money and I remember them having to get second mortgages, and these terrible loans and it made me bitter about that. And then later on as I learned about the financial industry, there was phrase that struck me about how the industry work, which was “in confusion there’s profit”. And it’s just this super cynical salesman need to make more money, by confusing you that struck. And we have the Internet that is a great way of countering that by making things clear and transparent. Nothing like anger to motivate through those early days of struggle. Arjan: So was that a driving factor in your imagining of E-Loan and Prosper as well? Chris: For sure E-Loan, Propser was a bit easier because we had some success and I became lazier doing Proser at times, but in those earlier days sure. Arjan: So your turning bitterness into betterness. Chris: OK I’ll take that Arjan: So Core is a mission driven venture fund, and one of the things we care about, and one of the reasons why invested in Ripple so many moons ago is doing well and doing good. Of course with the big promise of technology and you having Bill Clinton at your conference, at Swell, a few weeks ago, I feel he spoke so articulately about the idea that technology is a tool or a weapon depending on how you build it right. And even this week, there was an editorial in the NYT, Silicon Valley’s aspirations of doing good and it’s challenges with the dichotomy of doing no harm and doing good, they are very different pursuits. Chris: You’re talking about Kara Switcher’s article, yes I saw that as well. Arjan: Yes exactly Chris: There’s one key phrase that struck me in that editorial, was the different about wanted to good and not to do bad. And I think President Clinton laid this out as well. There is a tech backlash going on for sure, Silicon Valley has missed the boat on this Arjan: How so? Chris: Well it’s this continuation of something that worked 15-20 years ago. “We’re going to change the world, move fast and break things, and this very cavalier, adolescent approach about don’t worry about the consequences, everything is going to be fine. Arjan: Especially with global financial services? Chris: Totally, this is where fintech struggled, if it was pure code it’s one thing, but if it’s fintech where it’s technology, capital, and compliance, it’s a totally different thing. But Silicon continues down this march and it is really hurting the efforts right. It’s going to be for now. But it’s embed in this conference, it’s embedded single industry, there’s no avoiding it. But people are scared, that they don’t want to hear, that they are going to break things, they are going the disrupt things. The technology, the Blockchain technology that we are talking about today is distruptive for sure, but the teams have to go out of their way to be non-disruptive. I like to use the analogy that if you’re going for open heart surgery, a fairly disruptive procedure, you don’t want the Doctor to be disruptive right. You want the Doctor to be caring for you, and you know to convey empathy, and to be thinking about what can go wrong, and do no harm first. So you can think, the technology is disruptive, the teams have to go out of their way to not be disruptive. It’s a fundamental shift in the way of thinking of Silicon Valley. And Silicon Valley has some good stuff with philanthropy for example, we just announced Ripple for Good, a 100M dollars that we’re giving away and running that, Ripple Works which has a 20 person team t harnessing what the Silicon Valley has in talent, but that’s table space what you employees are expecting, especially in this generation, they want to see the companies doing good stuff. But that doesn’t address the bad stuff right, so I think we need to do a better job where Blockchain, fintech, tech in general need to better job admitting there are negative consequences, to the point of President Clinton made that it can be a tool or a weapon. To answer you question, cryptocurrencies are going to change the world, but they can do bad things such as money laundering, the exploitation of children for example, and that’s the issue that’s going to be an emerging for tech. There’s a great organization that we are involved with called THORN, wearethorn.org is the URL, but it’s devoted to preventative technologies from being used to exploit children. This is the problem with all technologies in general, we need confidence the google, facebook, social networking, and cryptocurrencies, absolutely. So we got to get ahead of that by facing up to the bad consequences of new technologies. Oh you could try saying something like cash is worse, well cash is already there, it’s already part of this world. Cryptocurrencies are not, and have to earn their way in, in this we have to go out of our way to acknowledge that, and haven’t done a good job at that. Arjan: So that’s true for the industry in large, and true in the crypto world. Talk a little about how you see Ripple doing that. You’re doing lots of very cool forward thinking stuff, how is Ripple steering clear there and leading the path. Chris: Well it’s getting involved in organizations such as THORN and find out what their trying to do and support the mission, and maybe trying to build that out into some technology can do that with symbols of approval. And then kind of generally working with the system, I think the big part of disruption in general, is stopping that, is getting involved with the industry with that. Arjan: Give me an example Chris: Well we’re doing the enterprise, we’re doing the banks with crypto. These things are going to change the world. These things are going to change the world, by working the system, you’re going to automatically be confronted with what those things are. Rather than going you own path and just being tone deaf with what’s going on. And obviously being involved with Washington, which we should talk about as well, we know you guys spend a lot of time talking policy as well. Arjan: Yes, occupational hazard. So why don’t we talk about that. Clearly there is along going on DC, I’m sure you guys spend a lot of time there, can you talk about the regulatory environment. What’s going on in the lobbying world, there is a lot of crypto-lobbying right now, it’s kind of noisy. Chris: It’s very active right now, Washington is kind of in a learning phase at the moment generally. But I have to kind of a say there is kind at the back with industry lobbying, it started earlier this year, a year ago, specifically around the Security, is it a commodity, question that’s been a hot topic in crypto. Arjan: And how are you doing on that? Chris: Well I think looking at that, what foreign is doing, that’s going to be very very important. Things really needs to focus on what’s going on in five years, not just today. The Securities, Commidities, Currencies issue of the past will be confronted by a series of additional things that will be more important than that. But one thing that I wanted to add the industry has met a series of court judgment in this lobbying effort of the day. Frankly I think there’s a couple of very large bitcoin holders, that have been very influential in Washington, that made a huge mistake. They should have gotten the industry together, all the major platforms, and should have emphasized this how it’s going to be a serious industry, that this is going to be the 2nd internet, fundamentally to change things. But they went with the message, give Bitcoin a pass, and by the way why don’t you try to kill those other platforms. How do you make the regulation work? And you know that has backfired spectacularly in my opinion. Because now you have is different islands of lobbying going on, and we’re involved with one called Securite America’s Internet of Value, look that’s going to be specially around companies using the XRP ledger rather than inviting a cohesive crypto. Look I think the mistake that was made was arguing that the only real crypto is Proof Of Work based, despite the fact now that most Proof Of Work is heavily concentrated in China, China has done a fantastic job with their position in that industry, now 74% of Bitcoin mining is in China. Despite the fact that the energy consumption is huge, despite the fact that Proof Of Work leads to more centralization. And I have to say, I think you need to have a lot of respect for current regulators and ex-regulators. Anyone who has been a regulator has served this country. That being said I need to call out a lesson that needs calling out, that is Garry Ginseler, who has been out there for months and months, that has been hearing the Bitcoin agenda, the Bitcoin is ok... Arjan: My Currency Chris: Ya, frankly try to kill off the challenging group. Specially those trying to figure the XRP ledger. And that is very unfortunate, and will be proven wrong on Ethereum, and proven wrong generally. We see him sometimes at conferences, he pops up all the time, spends some time walking through history that is incorrect, seeming not to have a really deep grasp on how the industry works. Seems to say I agree, I get it, thanks for clarifying that, then goes out of his way to repeat the same mis-characterizations. Clearly he has things like a bitcoin agenda, and I understand is a bitcoin holder, he should expose that if it’s the case. You know that’s not helping the industry, that’s not helping America Arjan: So in contrast what’s your guy’s approach Chris: There are a lot of naysayers out there on the industry in general. There should be, 90% of what you see today won’t be around in 10 years. And that's the way it’s support to work. We talk to Mark… recently, 90% of what we invest in will be in a smoldering crater in the ground. But 10% is going to change the world fundamentally, and the way we see it, the aspect that is going to have the most compounding impact on the world, is around completion of globalization. If you look at globalization today, it’s not working for people, it’s because it’s an incomplete picture. To really work you need to have interoperability of data, goods, money. You have interoperability of data, with the Internet it should be clear, but you don’t have a platform, you don’t have it with money. But thinks like Bockchain, and derivatives of Blockchain, things like interoperability, the protocol is called InterLedger, they have completed the picture. Now you have this global infrastructure for the movement of value that completes the picture, that completes the picture of globalization. Now that is a great thing. That brings in probably 2 Billion additional people, that needed the ability to move physically 50 cents across border, they can’t do that with todays systems, SWIFT, today’s banking is today’s antiquated, too expensive, too many failures. And the other key thing, and I think this is important with naysayers who are justified in being naysayers, namely the European Central Banks, who have been very skeptical of crypto, that have said that it’s not that big too matter, it’s not systemically important. But at the same time one thing that they are very focused on is that 10 years out from the financial crisis, we still don’t have the infrastructure perhaps to prevent the next one. I think this is where digital assets can come in to help, because a very efficient digital asset can really solve some of the key problems with global liquidity. The world has trillions and trillions of dollars tied up in liquidity, just to get around the klungy movement of value is around the world. If a really efficient digital asset, like XRP, and that’s what we believe is the most efficient, you can release trillions and trillions of capital from being tied up, so you can make those transfers instantly as you may, whether your a liquidity provider, or a banker, or as an enterprise with having the have money positioned all around the world. So that should really go to the heart of what these key players are looking at as the solution for preventing the next global crisis. This is where regulation gets tricky, you want to prevent the next global crisis, you can set up all kinds of regulation to make sure that never happens, or very little happens, the problem is that you might be preventing that 10% that are fundamentally game changers from making things actually work. Over-regulation could just as easily lead to the financial crisis as under regulation. And that’s what’s going on about that Arjan: Well it’s important, one one hand you’re saying tech entrepreneurs need to be extremely thoughtful about the downside, and not be obsessively optimistic about “oh it’s all good” and on the flip side, regulators need to do the reverse. Chris: That exactly what I mean, in some way to have that distruptive arrogant conversation, it kind of makes the regulators kind of back off and it’s a counterbalance and both needs to come together. Fintech does not work unless you have the regulators, the entrepreneurs, and institutions in the same room and can find some kind of common ground. Arjan: So signs of hope, are there pockets in the regulatory world here or internationally where you are seeing this? Chris: In the US this is complicated regulatorily, but this is the best fintech regulatory environment ever… ever! We should be accelerating this as we can, we are very lucky. Alot of things are complicated as all things are, it is a greater environment. What were are seeing overseas, where you see the most growth already, that the crypto world is already being solved. Arjan: Where specifically? Where are you optimistic? Chris: Well SouthEast Asia is a great example, Singapore is extremely great. Arjan: Europe? Chris: Alot is going on in Europe. If you come in very thoughtful about what the downsides are, of course you’re going to be focused on that. They’ve done a great job forcing the rest of the world to face up to some of the privacy issues for example, I think in crypto the same thing, you can make a lot of headway. We’re pretty encouraged there. The Middle East to India, are very active, we’re seeing a lot more there. Arjan: We’re about to run out of time so why don’t we do a quick round on a series of topics. So long, short, or pass. Bitcoin, you’re a Ripple or XRP guy. Chris: Well long. We’re long on the top platforms. Arjan: Custody Chris: Custody solutions are coming along all over the place, that’s been a big hole for institutions for getting involved. I think that’s about to be solved, you’re seeing a lot of innovation there, we recently announced __ and several that that are behind the scenes, that I probably talk about too much, that are great solutions. Arjan: Economic Growth Chris: Long certainly. We’re all too afraid that we’re 10 years out from the crisis, that we’re all these depression babies, we’re spending too much time worrying about it and it’s not going to happen. Arjan: And it sounds like your long on the current regulatory environment too Chris: Very much so, the Trump administration is doing a great job encouraging entrepreneurs and innovators Arjan: Innovation Hubs Chris: We’re very fortunate, specially what you’re seeing going on in France where we’re very fortunate Arjan: What’s going on in France? Chris: Yes they are doing some very cool stuff on their innovation hubs, supporting entrepreneurs, they are doing some very cool stuff.     For those who have no experience trading securities, equities, stocks, bonds, or anything at all, it's really easy to sit around and multiply your stash with whatever the market price could be. Sometimes it spikes up like crazy sometimes it dives. Point is, you need to be asking yourself how much are you netting. How much are you paying the government, the cost to get it out, opportunity cost, what are you doing with the money once it's gone. Can you even afford what you bought (if some crazy amount). For instance, you could easily buy a house cash that you can't afford to live, use, maintain, or pay taxes on. There's a reason people who win the lotto consistently go broke. The point is, money isn't easy. It doesn't solve all problems. It changes, alters, creates, and multiples problems. Remember, you can't take it with you. Do work on yourself before you imagine yourself purchasing a lifestyle you may know nothing about or can't afford.

    This is surely it guys. R3 are a huge company - 180 employees servicing 200 clients. They have explicitly come out and said their new Corda Settler service will use XRP. So how can the SEC rule XRP as a security of Ripple now? I know that Coil, Omni, Coinfield, Kucoin and DCEX are already using XRP for utility, but R3 using it is like the knockout blow for the FUDsters. It clearly has utility.

This unique combination of existing blockchain coursework, dynamic leadership and student engagement make UT Austin ripe for further blockchain exploration, and a perfect home for UBRI. At the Center and within his courses, Professor Fracassi touches on three main topics: machine learning and AI, Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain. He pointed out that each of these technologies is at a different stage of development within industry, with blockchain being earliest in its adoption and in a proof-of-concept phase. UBRI program outcomes at UT Austin should be to advance blockchain beyond this initial phase by helping students learn about the underlying technology and its potential applications in the real world — so they can better separate the hype from the reality. He says that as academics, they do not have businesses at stake and so can cast a more critical eye on the space. A subject like blockchain spans multiple topics such as science, engineering and law, while also having application in distinct industries such as finance, identity and healthcare. Its study allows the University to provide students with exposure to a variety of colleges within UT Austin. The addition of funds through UBRI has allowed Professor Fracassi and the Center to expand the range of students taking this blockchain-related coursework. This fall, the university expanded course offerings to include MBA, graduate level business analytics and computer science, and undergrad students. He expects about 200 students enrolling in these classes in the spring semester. The MBA, CompSci and undergrad courses cover much of the same ground, but each group has distinct needs and interests. For example, business students are more interested in the applications of blockchain, while computer science students are more focused on the technical coding elements. Beyond just offering these new classes, UBRI funds will allow for a new fintech-focused track, the addition of more faculty to focus on the topic, and more professional development and subject matter expertise among existing faculty. All of this is geared to funding three UBRI program goals: support for research, support for teaching, and outreach to the community in Austin and Texas more broadly. UBRI will also allow Professor Fracassi to lead more university-wide research into blockchain. He is currently spearheading an effort to review proposals from students and faculty across campus that are interested in receiving funds for blockchain research projects. He is enthusiastic about UBRI because it allows UT Austin to jumpstart their program and to work in tandem with other universities in the UBRI program. Ultimately, he hopes to have the Center operational and research projects funded within the next six months. By year two or three, he envisions having fully embedded blockchain into the University and its coursework as machine learning is now. Fracassi called this a “big deal” and noted that companies don’t often hand out unrestricted gifts in underfunded research areas. Because blockchain was developed by industry and not in academia, university researchers have been “struggling to catch up,” said Fracassi. Blockchain technology has been around for almost a decade, but it’s only in the last couple of years that universities have begun researching it. Now academics can play an important role in developing blockchain technology, he said. “Blockchain was discovered and developed by practitioners who focus on the short-term business applications, but academics have the luxury of thinking more long term,” he said. Bringing together academics from multiple disciplines can help develop new ways of thinking about blockchain technology, Fracassi said. But micropayments will allow us to pay as we consume, using tiny fractions of a cent that don’t impact our budget.” Prof. State and his team intend to make such micropayments a reality through Interledger, an open suite of protocols for sending money directly over the Internet, regardless of currency. Interledger uses a network of “connectors” – each making exchanges in at least two crypto or fiat currencies – to allow people to route money seamlessly across the Internet and across financial barriers. For the money to find the cheapest route from source to destination, however, thousands of connectors will need to exchange continuous information about their exchange fees and liquidity. One of SnT’s contributions will be to define how connectors exchange this information dynamically, allowing millions of payments per second to take the cheapest route through the network. “Connectors will make money by playing on exchange rates, and since cryptocurrencies are highly volatile we need to ensure that the network copes with this inherent instability,” says State. But in order for these applications to have real-world utility and acceptance, he says they must feature high levels of scalability and performance. He said also that the Centres for Economic Policy and the Centre for Alternative Technologies for Rural Applications have begun to show interest in using UBRI to explore blockchain for their own specific use cases. In February, they hosted 200 participants from academia, industry and government for a workshop on Blockchain, distributed ledger technologies and related applications. this workshop and others like it are an output of an active cybersecurity student club that meets regularly and is fond of having undergrads challenge seniors on their research and findings in order to promote group learning. IIT Bombay operates their own XRP validator on campus. He says this is an effective way to expose the students to blockchain principals in practice and show them the design behind Ripple’s consensus algorithm. In total, there are 11 people—from both the faculty and student communities—working on the validator. Live for the past three months, Professor Shyamasundar said it has produced an enormous amount of data that is warehoused and currently being used to set up a full-history server at the university. He mentioned that some of his students have been inspired by the sheer amount of resulting data to develop new projects by applying artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning. Further, he thinks the data generated from this validator can lead in several new research directions, such as the privacy of transactions, AI or machine learning-based predictions about the XRP Ledger, and applications in healthcare or land management. He even mentioned that three undergraduate students are actively working in these areas. For Ripple specifically, he is interested to learn whether it’s possible to predict “trust paths” for transaction initiators and whether it’s possible under concurrent operations to scale up without deadlocking. He also said his work aims to achieve privacy by appropriate scheduling, wherein AI and machine learning techniques help identify a set of timed transactions that deplete some of the nodes on the path for a target. Beyond the many blockchain-related projects already underway at IIT Bombay, Professor Shyamasundar mentioned a near-term effort to explore the capabilities of digital asset transfer using XRP. In the longer-term, he would like to cement UBRI-funded research capabilities as critical for local fintech and government partners. He understands that the world is becoming more interdependent, with global workflows and supply chains creating an opening for distributed ledger technologies to be utilized for time and process improvements. By creating partnerships with private and government entities, he hopes to build a natural path for IIT Bombay students to become entrepreneurs. This use of data and research at IIT Bombay as preparation for the real world is timely for Professors Shyamasundar. He sees the proliferation of information systems in our daily lives, augmented by the use of mobile devices, as creating an enormous data ecosystem that can be monetized in new ways and lead to entirely new business models. But he also worries this intrusive data gathering and the race to monetize it is making people very anxious and skeptical of the cost versus benefit of sharing their own data. Professor Alexander fundamentally believes that the study of blockchain and other new technologies is the foundation to building the entrepreneurs and workforce of tomorrow. He observed that industries advance in new technologies as they hire workers that have studied these technologies more extensively and are more familiar with how to apply and manage them. That’s why he believes ubiquitous commercial applications for blockchain are still a generation of startups away. He was adamant that while blockchain is a fascinating technology on its own, it requires people from across the vast spectrum of academia to make it effective. Bottom of the list with an embarrassing $100k. Remember, that's just half of 1 month - imagine a full year. That's not the only downside for the United States and it's citizens. Even if a startup in the cryptocurrency space isn't located in US, doing business with someone in the US means they must follow US regulations as well. Not wanting to deal with it, they've ignored the country entirely. Once the birthplace of countless breakthrough technologies, the United States now finds itself being abandoned, and ignored. But there's light at the end of the tunnel. I have now confirmed that the Token Taxonomy Act is on the verge of being introduced in the House, where it will soon begin the process of becoming law. The bill's original authors, Congressmen Warren Davidson (Republican, Ohio) along with Darren Soto (Democrat, Florida) are working together to give it a bipartisan introduction.     This is what has happened and what is happening IMO. My opinion only and I may be wrong - but I'm betting I'm not. Groups/People with money power/bitcoin= "They" Last year "They" Bought bitcoins on the exchanges in anticipation of the CME futures (CME market was cash settled only, trades on CME did not affect the price - these basically were just bets not purchases of bitcoin). The plan was to drive up the price of bitcoin by buying bitcoins on the exchanges in Oct, Nov, Dec 2017 then "They " took leveraged short positions on the futures market. Then "They" sold their bitcoins on the exchanges driving down the price and making money on their leveraged shorts on the CME futures market. This was the tail wagging the dog price wise. This year and upcoming - The Intercontinental Exchange ICE - (the owners of the NYSE) is starting a futures market at the end of January 2018 called BAKKT - https://cointelegraph.com/news/nyse-operators-bakkt-confirms-end-of-january-launch-date-for-digital-assets-platform. BAKKT will be settled in bitcoin. Because it's settled in bitcoin "They" can't just make a bet on what will happen on the exchanges then manipulate the price down. BAKKT will have to enter the market and buy the bitcoins and move them to their wallet. This will significantly drive up the price of Bitcoin.. So basically we are watching a reverse of last year "They" are driving down the price of bitcoin in anticipation of the futures market driving it up which starts at the end of January 2019. Once bitcoin moves up the entire market will move with it. Bitcoin is a lot more scarce than most commodities and has a set number - "Physical" futures market should propel it to ATH. XRP and all ALT's will go along for the ride. Would like to hear other's opinions. Especially why I am wrong.

The video ends prematurely. My impression was that these two companies agree that the world has changed and the future is that both companies will be working together on open platforms on the IoV. SWIFT has the advantage of moving banks cheaply onto a more up to date API only system but Ripple has the advantage of more advanced futuristic technology. If you are a new business you would go with Ripple, if you are an established business you have to make some hard assessments whether to move everything across to block chain now or to do it in stages.

    You Are Not Mistaken

    I was just trying to remember how I found out about XRP. Must have been just about a year ago. I was going to write something about cryptos.....I already knew Bitcoin was a horrible energy hog, and that it had a bubble in 2017 and it was crashing hard. I didn't take it seriously. I wondered if it was ready to go to zero. I had deliberately ignored the 2017 bull run. I was not a believer in BTC. I knew its days were numbered. As soon as I looked at some charts though, my investor spider sense kicked in. It was obvious the whole crypto market was already extremely oversold....and I began to look at other coins....I began to try to understand what this new tech --- blockchain ---- really amounted to....Bitcoin was not the whole story. Not even close. It probably took me a day or so to figure out that there were many other protocols and that there were 2nd and 3rd generation coins that had apparently solved the issues associated with mining. I got more excited. I read the Maxi FUD about XRP being a "bankers coin" and all the negative stuff.....and figured immediately it was mostly crap. I went to the blogosphere to see if I could get some more perspective. I ran across a couple of really good bloggers. One was a real curmudgeon, name of Galgitron. He had the online demeanor of a grizzled combat vet, and he obviously didn't suffer fools gladly. But he said a lot of things that made me more interested in XRP. And then there was this other fellow....always positive, always up-to-date on the latest news out of Ripple, always steadfast in his commitment to the XRP story. A more prolific writer than the first guy, and a good one. His name, as you might have surmised by now, was Hodor. I haven't missed a blog of yours since, I don't believe. These times of a sideways market with big drawdowns can test the patience of the most serious investor. It's really good to read that the story is still positive, and the tech is still the best, and the ecosystem is growing fast. It's been an interesting year for me...in terms of learning. I like to make money, but I love to learn even more. There is nothing more true than that ancient saying : "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." Thanks for being one of my best teachers.

    This is a really great question and I see another related response so I'm going to reply to them together. What got me started on this theme was an early question to the effect of, "I don't see why other crypto people can't quickly duplicate what Ripple is doing with XRP." The rebalancing problem is one of two key advantages Ripple the company has over other cryptocurrency teams. Without giving away and particular inside information or processes, let's speculate on what I think these rebalancing advantages are. It is well known that Ripple has a trading and markets team headed by Miguel Vias. It's also guessable that he, Ripple, the RippleNet banks, and the xRapid remittance providers all likely have relationships with trading firms that specialize in market making and rebalancing. I haven't seen any other effort that could throw this kind of team a the problem to facilitate a quick solution. It is also well known that Ripple has a sales team headed by John Mitchell. When you think about an imbalanced flow into Mexico driving up prices, it is pretty easy to calculate that also means the flow out of Mexico is under priced. So for a sales team that is golden, "How would you like send your payments our of Mexico at less than market rates? This doesn't hold forever since the flows start to balance, but potentially could kickstart deals. When using XRP as a bridge currency, you don't need to balance remittance flows with remittance flow. You can balance them with any other flow. And importantly, you don't need to balance USD/MXN two way flows. You only need to balance (anything) into Mexico, against (anything) out of Mexico. [This is also true of any bridge currency, so it isn't a particular XRP advantage. But it is helpful to see how it can make the other two teams more effective.] I'll save the second major advantage for another thread.

    I don't feel the answer was "not that good". Question Answer First, he corrects the statement about Ripple providing liquidity. Second, he puts into perspective what happened overnight in the market place. Third, he translates the question into an appropriate one. Again, he points out the liquidity does not have to do anything with Ripple itself. Again, he reformulated the initial question. Again, he states what happened overnight. He highlights the liquidity difference between XRP and the other existing solutions. He depicts what the market would chose, given the advantageous liquidity risk XRP provides, associated with the limited liquidity cost. Again he states what happened the day before in the market place, which is pretty nascent in his opinion, that itself is enough of an answer to the initial but reformulated question.
